From sewing passion to craft business

In a small workshop filled with colorful fabrics in Tu Ky commune, a group of craftsmen work diligently every day on sewing machines, meticulously following each stitch. There, Ms. Nguyen Thi Thuy Duong, co-founder and General Director of Khue Cac Group Company Limited, is still diligently working on her designs.

She said the idea came from her love for her family: “I started by sewing my child’s old shirt to make a blanket to preserve memories. When I posted it on social media, I didn’t expect so many people to like it and place orders. From then on, I realized I could do something bigger, both creative and contributing to protecting the environment.”

From a small passion, Ms. Duong embarked on a challenging entrepreneurial journey. During more than 13 years of working in handicrafts, she not only created beautiful products but also conveyed the message: "Give a new life to each piece of fabric". The blankets, bags, wallets, fabric rugs... made by her and her colleagues not only have aesthetic value but also preserve memories.

Each Lovey Quilts product has its own unique stamp and is a unique version.

In 2021, Ms. Duong decided to establish Khue Cac Group Company Limited, expanding production scale and connecting many women with the same passion.

Accompanying Ms. Duong is Ms. Nguyen Hue , the company's marketing director, who helps bring handmade products closer to the market. Because they are completely handmade and involve many steps, Lovey Quilts products are more expensive than industrially produced products.

To reach a wide range of customers, the factory also makes accessories, wallets, bedding... with prices ranging from a few tens of thousands to several million VND depending on size, material and sophistication.

As the “fast fashion ” trend continues to grow, every year countless amounts of clothing and excess fabric, especially jeans, are thrown away, putting a huge strain on the environment.

Collecting old fabrics, processing them, and recycling them into unique handmade products that are both artistic and meaningful to the community is a meaningful entrepreneurial journey. According to Ms. Duong, the most special thing about recycled products is that no two are alike.

“Each piece of fabric has a story. They are cleaned, processed, and skillfully combined to create unique products. Customers like that “uniqueness” because they see their own mark in it,” said Ms. Duong.

From the early days of difficult start-up, until now, the Lovey Quilts brand of Ms. Duong and Ms. Hue is known by many people as a brand specializing in the production of handmade products from fabric, created with love and passion, specializing in products such as handbags and blankets, carrying many meanings about the community and environmental protection.

In 2024, the company will collect about 5 tons of scrap fabric and old jeans and produce more than 10,000 recycled products for the market. Bags, backpacks, rugs... under the Lovey Quilts brand are increasingly popular for their aesthetics and environmental friendliness.

Spread meaningful things

According to Ms. Nguyen Hue, the company's director, Lovey Quilts not only sells products, but also wants to spread a green lifestyle to the community and contribute to the community.

The factory currently has nearly 10 workers, most of whom are disadvantaged women with difficult lives, with incomes ranging from 6 to 8 million VND/person/month. Each worker working at the company is trained in a trade, has a stable income and is more confident in themselves.

“We want the disadvantaged to be able to take control of their lives and the value of their labor,” said Ms. Hue.

By leveraging the power of digital transformation, the company opened sales channels on social networks, joined groups about handmade products, and promoted through e-commerce platforms. Lovey Quilts products gradually conquered customers at home and abroad. Currently, many models are available in the Netherlands, Japan, and New Zealand, through individuals and organizations that bring them to display and introduce. Ms. Nguyen Thi Lieu, a customer, said: "I buy Lovey Quilts bags because of their unique designs, which are not available anywhere else. Each bag has only one version, which is what makes it special to me."

Positive feedback from consumers is the driving force for Ms. Duong and her colleagues to constantly innovate. Recycling products is an action for the environment, a way to change consumer habits and move towards sustainability.

In the near future, Ms. Duong plans to expand her team and train more female workers, especially those in difficult circumstances. At the same time, she plans to bring her products to many tourist areas, big cities and aim for official export to international markets. "We hope that Vietnamese handicrafts will be known to friends around the world," Ms. Duong said.
