In recent years, street art in Hai Phong has flourished, becoming a “ferment” that contributes to the vitality of the city, attracts tourists and expands the creative space of the community. The spontaneous performances with the street as the stage help Hai Phong become a new cultural rendezvous, rich in identity and towards the model of a “ music city”.
Vibrant street art
On the evening of November 29, the street art program organized by the City Center for Culture, Cinema and Exhibition took place at the City Theater Square. 11 performances from the medley "A holly jolly", "The moon speaks for my heart", to youthful songs such as "Ngị ngạn", "Say mot doi vi em", mashup "Ngội nhà hanh phuc - De em roi xa"... The appearance of the Diamond Dance Group, singers Viet Dai, Binh Nhi and shadow artist Gia Ban made the square more vibrant.
Not far away, at Nguyen Trai flower garden, the art program was performed by artists from Hai Phong Traditional Theater, to he artisan Tong Thi Thuy Tam and Han Nom Calligraphy Club. The sound of drums, cheo singing, or the images of small and pretty to he figurines delighted many tourists and locals, especially children. The program brought a different color, imbued with traditional sounds.
Meanwhile, the “Connecting Passion” stage of Bach Dang walking street, managed by Le Thanh Nghi ward, is still regularly lit up on weekends and becomes a meeting place for art lovers. Each night, there are about 20 modern dance, folk dance or singing performances from clubs inside and outside the ward. The performances are self-staged and rehearsed by non-professional artists, but bring a lively and attractive atmosphere.
Being taken by a friend to attend the performance at the City Theater Square, Ms. Hoang Khanh An from Hung Yen happily said: “Coming to Hai Phong to see street art made me very surprised. The performances were very attractive. The atmosphere was vibrant and youthful, I felt like I was immersed in the life of the people here.”
The contrast between the vibrant atmosphere at Bach Dang and the traditional nuances at Nguyen Trai flower garden creates a colorful Hai Phong, connecting the community through art. Ms. Le Thu Hang, a resident of Le Chan ward, expressed: "It's great to enjoy free art programs like this every weekend night. This is not only a place for entertainment and enjoying art on the weekend but also contributes to improving spiritual life. We hope to have more performances like this."
For artists, this is not only a playground but also an opportunity to meet, exchange and spread passion. Ms. Pham Tra My, a member of a dance group, said: “Performing on the stage “Connecting Passion” helps us become more confident and interact with many other dance groups. This stage helps us both satisfy our passion and spread positive energy to everyone.”
From professional stages to amateur stages, from street guitar playing to large art programs… all are contributing to the new cultural vitality of Hai Phong.
Catalyst for livable cities

Street theaters not only bring joy to people but also open up opportunities for urban tourism development. Many tourists said they were impressed to enjoy free art right on the street. These performance spaces enrich the tourist experience, prolong their stay and create conditions for the development of food services and surrounding businesses.
Street art is also affirming the identity of Hai Phong - a city always known for its openness, personality and rich musical tradition. In its cultural development orientation, Hai Phong aims to build the image of a "City of Music", where music and art are present in daily life. To achieve that, art must become close, accessible and continuously appear in urban spaces.
As Dr. Pham Huu Thu, Vice President of the Hai Phong Union of Science and Technology Associations, once shared, one of the solutions to build a “Music City” is that Hai Phong needs to promote music and community education. In addition to upgrading art schools or incorporating art into the general education program, it is necessary to create conditions for young music groups, street artists, and residential communities to develop creative performance models. It is possible to organize a monthly “Community Music Day” in public spaces.
According to incomplete statistics, Hai Phong currently has 22 performing arts clubs managed by the Center for Culture, Cinema and Exhibition, along with a system of clubs and performing arts teams in 114 communes, wards and special zones. In addition, there are many clubs and performing arts groups for young people or art lovers.
With the support of cultural agencies, the artist community and the people, Hai Phong street art is affirming its role as a "soft driving force" of the city.
