Apple releases iOS 26.5 with a host of new features.

Apple has officially released iOS 26.5 (and iPadOS 26.5), nearly two months after the company rolled out iOS 26.4.

The iOS 26.5 update introduces end-to-end encryption for RCS messages, allowing iPhone and Android users to exchange messages securely. To use this feature, both parties in the conversation need to have carrier support, and carriers will roll out this feature over time. Encrypted RCS messages will have a small lock icon, similar to iMessage.

iOS 26.5 brings three major improvements for iPhone users, in addition to security patches.

In the Maps app, Apple has added Suggested Places to show suggestions based on location and recent searches. The Maps app will also feature ads this summer, with the ad platform already integrated into iOS 26.5 and iPadOS 26.5.

Additionally, Apple introduced new Pride Luminance wallpapers, matching the Apple Watch Pride Luminance watch faces and bands. The updates on the iPad are essentially the same.

Please note that some features may not be available in all regions or on all iPhone models compatible with iOS 26.

After iOS 26.5, will Apple focus on iOS 27?

iOS 26.5 and iPadOS 26.5 may be among the last updates with new features for the iOS 26 platform as Apple shifts its focus to iOS 27 and iPadOS 27. The iPhone maker is expected to introduce the new platforms at its annual Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June.

Users can download iOS 26.5 and iPadOS 26.5 on compatible iPhone and iPad devices by going to Settings > General > Software Update . Additionally, Apple has also released iOS 15.8.8, iOS 16.7.16, iOS 18.7.9, and iPadOS 17.7.11 for older devices that do not support iOS 26 and iPadOS 26.
