Apple is developing a smart anti-theft feature for the iPhone.

(GLO) - Apple is developing a new security feature for iPhones to combat the increasing number of phone snatching incidents. According to information from the technology website 9to5Mac, cited by many news outlets, this feature could automatically lock the screen when it detects the device has been snatched from the user's hand.

The new anti-theft feature operates based on a combination of hardware sensors and contextual data. The system uses an accelerometer to detect unusual movements such as sudden jerks or abrupt changes in velocity.

At the same time, the iPhone also tracks the distance from the Apple Watch being worn on the user's wrist to determine if the device has been taken away unexpectedly.

Additionally, Apple is reportedly combining location data, familiar Wi-Fi networks, and AI algorithms to assess risk levels. If an iPhone is taken outside of a familiar area, such as home or work, in a suspicious situation, the device will activate additional layers of protection. This could apply restrictions similar to "Stolen Device Protection," such as requiring Face ID authentication or delaying changes to Apple Account information for up to an hour.

Tech experts consider this a significant upgrade because existing features like Find My, Activation Lock, and Stolen Device Protection still have vulnerabilities that can be exploited if a thief steals the phone while the screen is unlocked.

In many cases, simply knowing the screen lock password allows thieves to quickly access sensitive data, change Apple ID passwords, or take control of the victim's financial accounts.

In fact, Google has been implementing a similar feature on Android since 2024 called "Thief Detection Lock." This technology uses AI and motion sensors to detect theft and automatically lock the device to protect personal data.

Apple has not yet announced an official release date for the new feature. However, the appearance of related code within the iOS system suggests that the company is accelerating the development of this technology.

Many experts expect that automatic anti-theft features will soon be integrated into upcoming iOS updates, enhancing the safety of iPhone users against increasingly sophisticated theft threats.
