Argentina arrests 7 suspects of radical Islamist group plotting terrorist attacks

Suspected Islamic extremists are planning attacks against Western communities in Mendoza, Argentina.

On August 17, Argentine Security Minister Patricia Bullrich announced the arrest of seven suspects from an extremist Islamic group plotting to carry out terrorism in the western city of Mendoza.

On her social media account X, Ms. Bullrich said that the police had dismantled a radical Islamic terrorist group and had identified the leader.

Members of the organization used social media to discuss attack plans and various content from the terrorist group Daesh, which is banned in Russia.

Minister Bullrich affirmed: “We will eliminate all criminals who intend to sow fear among the Argentine people.”

In a statement released the same day, the Argentine federal police said: “Through anti-Christian and anti-Semitic rhetoric via Telegram and WhatsApp, the arrested individuals planned an attack against the Western community in Mendoza with content related to terrorist organizations such as the self-proclaimed Islamic State and the Taliban in Afghanistan.”

During the raid, police seized many weapons. Argentina is the country with the largest Jewish community in Latin America, with more than 300,000 people.
