Mr. Quirno stated that the application for membership would be submitted to the New Zealand Minister of Trade, the country holding the depositary role for the agreement. The Argentine Foreign Minister emphasized that the CPTPP currently brings together 12 member economies and accounts for approximately 13% of global GDP.
Joining the agreement will help Argentina strengthen its connections with the world's most dynamic markets, while also creating more opportunities for exports, investment, and private sector development.
If approved, Argentina would become the fourth South American country to join the CPTPP, after Chile, Peru, and Mexico, and significantly expand its network of trading partners beyond the Southern Common Market (Mercosur).
The CPTPP is currently the world's fourth-largest free trade area, with members including Australia, Brunei, Canada, Chile, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, New Zealand, Peru, Singapore, the United Kingdom, and Vietnam.
