Arsenal's surprise deal to buy Eberechi Eze shocked Tottenham and changed the transfer market landscape. |
According to The Athletic and The Guardian , coach Mikel Arteta decided to buy Eze after striker Kai Havertz suffered a knee injury in the 1-0 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford on August 17.
While Arsenal are still assessing the extent of the injury, they are concerned Havertz could be out for a long time, prompting Arsenal to speed up negotiations with Eze, who the club have been in regular contact with throughout the summer.
Tottenham had previously thought they had successfully signed Eze after also reaching a £67.5 million deal with Crystal Palace. However, Arsenal's last-minute involvement made Eze change his mind. The player expressed his desire to play for the Gunners.
Arsenal will pay Palace an initial fee of £60m, plus a further £7.5m if add-ons are met. Queens Park Rangers, who sold Eze to Palace for £19.5m in 2020, will receive 15% of the profits from the deal.
Eze is expected to play for Palace in the first leg of the Conference League play-off round in the early morning of August 22, before going to Arsenal for a medical and becoming the club's seventh signing this summer.
In addition to Eze, Arsenal also plan to buy winger Malick Fofana from Lyon for £50 million. The "Gunners" are actively strengthening their attack to open up opportunities to compete for the Premier League title this season.
