Australia uses passive acoustic USV to monitor territorial waters

Australia manages up to 10% of the world's ocean surface, so introducing unmanned autonomous devices to monitor its territorial waters is essential.

Australia is pushing to integrate ThayerMahan's Outpost passive acoustic surveillance system with Ocius' Bluebottle unmanned surface vessel (USV) to enhance maritime security.

As Australia is responsible for monitoring approximately 10 percent of the world 's ocean surface and approximately 59,700 km (37,100 mi) of coastline, passive acoustic surveillance systems support real-time signal processing to track targets at sea.

During ongoing testing, the Bluebottle USV serves as the deployment platform for the Outpost system and is used for missions such as illegal fishing detection, border security and monitoring marine protected areas.

Outpost transmits data for global command and control, enabling automated threat detection, reporting and warning, supporting timely decision making according to mission requirements.

It is also used in anti-submarine and anti-surface warfare operations. ThayerMahan said the system integration “positions Australian USVs as a key platform for deploying a distributed network of underwater surveillance systems, supporting the AUKUS partnership’s requirement for advanced defence technology”.

ThayerMahan's Outpost is a marine monitoring system capable of operating autonomously for more than 90 days by harvesting wave, solar and wind energy.

The system is deployed from small unmanned surface vessels and uses large passive sonar arrays positioned underneath to provide long-range acoustic sensing capabilities, from port to ocean.

This data processing system uses artificial intelligence combined with human analysis to classify signals in real time. Ocius's Bluebottle USV can be easily launched from a marina or directly from a ship and has a speed of up to 5 knots (5.7 miles/9.2 km/h).

The USV is capable of carrying a modular payload of up to 300 kg (660 pounds). Bluebottle has an intelligent network system that allows multiple USVs to work together to carry out group missions.
