Currently, all three patients are in good health, with stable vital signs. The simultaneous weaning from ventilators is considered a crucial turning point in their treatment.
According to Dr. Tran Long Quan, Head of the Pediatric Emergency, Intensive Care and Toxicology Department at Da Nang Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital, the 7-year-old patient was the fastest recovering case, having been weaned off the ventilator nearly 24 hours prior to noon on March 14th.
The 15-year-old patient was weaned off the ventilator on the afternoon of March 13th, while the 11-year-old patient began weaning off the ventilator on the evening of March 13th and completed the process on the morning of March 14th.
The children's condition improved significantly, and their respiratory indicators stabilized, so we proceeded with weaning them off the ventilators. All three are now out of critical condition. The children will continue to receive monitoring, supportive treatment, and rehabilitation in the coming days.
Previously, on March 9th, all three patients were admitted to the emergency room in critical condition with symptoms including drooping eyelids, weakness in all four limbs, and rapidly progressing respiratory failure, requiring mechanical ventilation support.
The pediatric patients were given Botulism Antitoxin Heptavalent (BAT) injections, coordinated and provided urgently by the World Health Organization (WHO). On the evening of March 11th, as soon as the medication arrived at Da Nang International Airport, the health sector immediately transported it to hospitals for detoxification during the night.
A portion of the medication was sent to Da Nang Obstetrics and Pediatrics Hospital to treat two children aged 7 and 11, while the remainder was sent to the Northern Quang Nam Regional General Hospital for a 15-year-old patient.
Administering the antidote early helps neutralize botulinum toxin, preventing further nerve damage and giving patients a chance to recover. This medication is rare and costs approximately $8,000 per vial.
These three patients are brothers from the same family in Phuoc Nang commune, Da Nang city, who suffered food poisoning after eating fermented fish on March 8th.
