The Nguyen Khoai bridge and road, the expansion of Chu Van An road, and the renovation of Xuyen Tam canal are major projects scheduled to begin in 2024 to help reduce traffic congestion and pollution in the area.
With a total investment of over 3,700 billion VND, the Nguyen Khoai bridge and road project connecting Districts 7, 4, and 1 is the largest transportation project expected to commence in 2024. The project has a total length of nearly 5 km, including a bridge section of approximately 2.5 km, 6.5-25.5 m wide; and a road section of over 2.3 km, 26.5-61.5 m wide.
The project starts from D1 road (connecting Saigon University with Nguyen Van Linh road and Him Lam residential area, District 7), then the main bridge crosses the Te Canal on an elevated viaduct along Nguyen Khoai road. The bridge continues across the Ben Nghe canal, connecting to Vo Van Kiet road, District 1, via two branches N7 and N8. Other connecting branches are also being built simultaneously to connect to District 4.

The project is expected to commence in late Q4 2024 and be completed after three years. Once operational, the project will create a new road axis connecting South Saigon, including districts 7, 8, 4, and Nha Be, through the city center, reducing congestion on the Kenh Te Bridge, Nguyen Huu Tho Street, Nguyen Van Cu Street, Duong Ba Trac Street, and internal routes in District 4.
The second key project to be launched this year is the upgrading and expansion of Chu Van An Street, from the Binh Hoa Five-Way Intersection to Phan Chu Trinh Street in Binh Thanh District. With a total investment of over 1,000 billion VND, the 600-meter section will be widened from 5-6 meters to 23 meters. Construction is expected to begin at the end of the fourth quarter of 2024 and be completed after one year.
Compared to before, the project has decreased in scale, both in length and width, but the total investment has increased by nearly 400 billion VND after updating the compensation and land clearance costs. Of the total capital invested, the estimated compensation cost accounts for nearly 982 billion VND (92%), to pay for 176 affected cases, including 7 households completely relocated and 169 households partially relocated.
It is expected that the compensation process will be completed by Binh Thanh District in the third quarter of 2024 to hand over the land to the construction unit. The completed expansion project will help eliminate the "bottleneck" that has caused traffic congestion for many years in the area, facilitating business and trade for residents.

Also this year, Ho Chi Minh City will commence the major project to renovate and build infrastructure for the Xuyen Tam canal – an inner-city canal – with a total investment of over 9,800 billion VND. This is the largest environmental and social welfare project implemented by the city this year.
Accordingly, the Xuyen Tam canal, nearly 9 km long, flowing through Binh Thanh and Go Vap districts, is divided into two sections: the main canal, nearly 6.7 km long, from the Nhieu Loc - Thi Nghe canal to the Vam Thuat river, and three branches, each over 2.2 km long (the Son Bridge, Binh Trieu, and Binh Loi branches). The project will involve dredging the canal to a depth of 3.5 m and a width of 20-30 m, along with a synchronized wastewater and rainwater collection system. Roads will be built on both banks, each with two lanes, 6 m wide, sidewalks 3-4 m wide, along with parks, green spaces, and a lighting system.
According to Mr. Nguyen Hoang Anh Dung, Deputy Director of the Ho Chi Minh City Urban Infrastructure Investment and Construction Project Management Board (the investor), of the two localities through which the canal passes, the section through Go Vap District is expected to start construction first in August 2024, due to the smaller amount of land clearance required. For the section through Binh Thanh District, the local authorities are expected to hand over all the land by April 2025, allowing for the completion of the entire project by 2028.

Xuyen Tam Canal is one of the most severely polluted canals in Ho Chi Minh City for decades. The canal renovation project, once completed, will not only improve the environment but also add two parallel roads, opening up transportation connections and contributing to urban development in the area.
In addition to commencing new projects, in 2024 the city plans to complete 40 major transportation projects and packages, such as the Tran Quoc Hoan - Cong Hoa connecting road (Tan Binh district), the Nguyen Van Linh - Nguyen Huu Tho underpass (District 7), the Nam Ly bridge (Thu Duc City), etc.
