By a vote of 95-1, the US Senate confirmed Admiral Lisa Franchetti as Chief of Naval Operations and General David Allvin as Chief of Staff of the Air Force. Meanwhile, Lieutenant General Christopher Mahoney became Deputy Commandant of the Marine Corps by a vote of 86-0.
With this result, Ms. Franchetti became the first woman to command the US Navy and a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
All three were nominated months ago, but their confirmations were delayed by Senator Tuberville’s obstruction of the abortion policy, which affected nearly 400 officers. The Pentagon even claimed that the delay in confirmation threatened national security.
The US Senate is expected to continue approving the military personnel that has been delayed for a while. Chairman of the Senate Armed Services Committee, Democratic Senator Jack Reed, has proposed a draft to suspend the Senate's ability to vote on multiple military personnel at the same time, but only until the end of next year. The Senate will consider this draft resolution in the coming weeks.
