Three actors Danh Thai, Viet Anh and Doan Quoc Dam made the audience "remember their faces" with their villainous roles in many famous films such as Running from an, Judge, Life and death,...
Danh Thai: Once suspected of receiving a death sentence for his villainous role
The actor who set the record for the most "imprisonments" on Vietnamese screens is Danh Thai. Originally a Tuong artist, Danh Thai is known to audiences for his villainous roles on television. He has appeared in famous films such as Secret of the Golden Triangle, Judge, Birth and Death, Taste of Love, Village Street, Battle of Intelligence...
Actor Danh Thai sets the record for being "in and out of jail" the most on Vietnamese screen.
Danh Thai is the most chosen by directors to play the roles of "going to jail", "being handcuffed" and "appearing in court" because he has an angular face, a sullen, fierce expression on film that is very different from real life. After 30 years of acting, Danh Thai has never been "reformed" on screen. The actor cannot remember the number of times he has worn handcuffs and stood in front of the bar in film.
The actor also encountered many "half-laughing, half-crying" situations when he played the villain role so well. He shared that he almost couldn't get married because he was mistaken for a bad guy. His wife's family objected, but Danh Thai's honesty and simplicity finally made his wife's family nod in acceptance.
Another unforgettable incident was when Danh Thai reenacted a character who was sentenced to death in a TV show to the point that the audience and his relatives and friends in his hometown thought he was really guilty. Even the actor's father was so scared that he called his son to ask what was the truth.
However, he affirmed that he gained more than he lost when he succeeded with the villain role because "the more the audience hates me, the more proud I feel" . Danh Thai cherishes every opportunity to appear on screen because for him, every role that the audience remembers is also a success.
Viet Anh: Out of 10 roles, 8 go to jail.
Actor Viet Anh is also a familiar face to audiences, specializing in roles involving the law. Since Running from the Law in 2006, most of Viet Anh's on-screen characters have ended up in prison.
In Running from the Law , Viet Anh plays Cao Thanh Lam - the son of a deputy minister who was arrested for gambling, interbank theft and drug addiction. Lam was imprisoned and then pretended to be mentally ill to be released on bail.
In the movie The Judge , he plays the role of young master Phan Hai - son of boss Phan Quan, who was arrested by the police for drug smuggling, protecting nightclubs, bars and other gangster activities.
Viet Anh was once stereotyped in the roles of a scoundrel and a criminal.
In Maze , Viet Anh could not escape the "prison" scene. He played the role of lawyer Dong Hoa - the boss of the Evil La gang who was arrested for murder. In Sinh Tu, the actor born in 1981 played the role of Mai Hong Vu - the boss in the big economic case of Viet Thanh province, convicted of murder and bribery of officials.
It was not until 2022 that the actor was able to "reform" on screen with the movie Journey of Justice, but Viet Anh's character was also investigated for suspicion of murdering his lover. The two rare movies that Viet Anh did not have to go to jail for were Huong Duong Nguoc Nang and Chong Cuu, Vo Cuu, Nguoi Yeu.
Being stereotyped into gangster and rogue roles, Viet Anh promised himself not to accept any scripts that involve a role in prison. He hopes to bring a new image to the audience in new projects.
The actor shared: “ Up until now, people have often seen me being stereotyped as a bad man or a gangster. Every role has led to jail, 8 out of 10 roles. With Huong Duong Nguoc Nang, I didn't go to jail anymore and most importantly, I got to be a decent person, creating a new image of Viet Anh on television, that is a lovely, cute, loyal guy."
No matter what kind of role, Viet Anh always affirms his ability to excellently transform into the character, bringing many different colors through his roles.
Doan Quoc Dam: More than half of his acting career is of characters with criminal pasts.
Compared to Viet Anh, Doan Quoc Dam is also an actor who has been in and out of prison with no less frequency. In Doan Quoc Dam's acting portfolio, half of the roles he has played are bad, scheming, dangerous characters...
Doan Quoc Dam plays the murderer Fedora in the movie "The Labyrinth".
We can mention the role of murderer Fedora in Maze , or in Sinh Tu, Doan Quoc Dam also plays the role of a boss of the investigation agency but participates in group interests, and eventually has to go to jail to "pay the debt" for his own crimes.
In Crocodile File , Doan Quoc Dam plays the role of "one-eyed" Cuong, a dangerous criminal. His role as Phuc in Sunflower Against the Sun is also a character who has just been released from prison for serving a sentence in place of someone else. Once again, the audience sees Doan Quoc Dam "go to jail" when playing the role of a corrupt boss in Battle of Minds...
In addition to his roles in various films, the actor also played a gangster living on the fringes of the law in Quynh Bup Be . Only with the role of Phong in Thuong ngay nang ve and recently Thanh in Gia dinh minh vui bat thuc luat , Doan Quoc Dam has "escaped" prison.
Regarding having to play villain roles many times, Doan Quoc Dam shared that it is normal. The actor hopes to continue to conquer more types of roles on the small screen.
