- In the past, supermarkets and convenience stores were almost only available in cities, and people living in rural areas who wanted to go shopping at supermarkets or buy electronic and refrigeration equipment often had to go to the city. Now, modern retail channels are present in all districts, towns, and even in the centers of communes.

Up to now, Lang Son's population is about 800 thousand people, of which about 79% live in rural areas. In recent years, the socio -economic situation has been increasingly developed, people's lives have been improved, shopping and consumption needs have also changed towards better service quality and more convenience, therefore, rural areas have become a potential market for developing modern retail channels.

Grasping that situation, some supermarkets and convenience stores have implemented a strategy to expand the market and distribution channels to rural areas. These include: the WinMart+ convenience store system is present in the districts of Loc Binh and Cao Loc; the Dien May Xanh supermarket system has built stores in most districts in the province; private convenience stores, mini supermarkets, electronics and refrigeration stores are opened in many commune centers and commune clusters...

Mr. Dang Van Dung, Manager of WinMart+ system in Lang Son said: Currently, WinMart+ has 14 stores in Lang Son city and Loc Binh and Cao Loc districts. Through business results and surveys of actual consumer needs in the districts of the province, we plan to continue to open 14 to 15 more WinMart+ convenience stores. Currently, we have been surveying, selecting locations and setting a goal that by the end of 2025, WinMart+ will be present in all districts in the province to serve consumers in rural areas.

Before WinMart+, the Dien May Xanh supermarket chain has been present in most districts in the province. Mr. Ngo Hoang Ha, Manager of Dien May Xanh in Lang Son said: In 2015, Dien May Xanh supermarket opened its first facility in Lang Son city. After a period of operation and realizing that rural areas are a very potential market, we have built a business strategy and expanded distribution channels. By 2020, the Dien May Xanh supermarket system was present in 10 districts of the province. In addition to ensuring the supply of goods and diversifying products, at all supermarkets in the district, we provide free home delivery service to meet the maximum demand, creating convenience when shopping for rural consumers.

Not only large enterprises, private businesses have also grasped the needs of the rural market to invest and build convenience stores. As one of the commune cluster centers with quite vibrant trade and service activities, in recent years, in the area around Pac Khuong market, Thien Thuat commune, Binh Gia district, many convenience stores, family supermarkets, electronics stores have appeared... Ms. Ha Thi Duyen, owner of a family supermarket in Pac Khuong village, said: My family has been running a grocery store since 2010, however, at that time, the scale was still small. By 2020, to better meet people's needs, my family invested in facilities and equipped more shelves, computer systems, QR payment codes... At the same time, I also imported a variety of items from confectionery, milk to shoes, household appliances... Currently, on average, my store welcomes about 30 to 50 customers per day, and during market days, the number of customers can double.

According to preliminary statistics, in addition to 3 shopping centers and 9 large supermarkets operating in the city, the province also has about 3,500 convenience stores, mini supermarkets, self-service stores... of which about 50% are in rural areas. According to the assessment of the Trade Management Department, Department of Industry and Trade, the modern retail channel widely developed in the province has promoted the development of the trade and service sector, meeting the needs of the people.

Mr. La Duc Doan, Head of the Trade Management Department, Department of Industry and Trade said: Through the department's monitoring, in recent times, the modern retail channels of shopping centers, supermarkets, convenience stores... have been maintained stably, with abundant and diverse sources of goods, meeting the shopping needs of the people. In the coming time, the department will continue to advise the department to implement programs and activities to attract major brands in the retail sector to invest in business establishments in Lang Son, while creating conditions for businesses already present in Lang Son to expand their markets, especially towards the rural market.

The development of modern retail channels has significantly contributed to enhancing the value of the retail sector in the province. In 2023, the total retail turnover of the province reached VND 31,729.9 billion, an increase of 27.2% compared to 2022; in the first 9 months of 2024, the total retail turnover of the province reached VND 23,692.4 billion, an increase of 14.1% compared to the same period in 2023.

The development of modern retail channels in rural areas not only helps retail businesses maintain market share, improve competitiveness and revenue, but also contributes to meeting consumer needs. Thereby, contributing to promoting the development of trade and service activities in the province.
