Vietnamese flan ranks among the best desserts in Asia.

This familiar dessert, made from eggs, milk, and caramel sugar, originated in Europe and is ranked 87th among the 100 best desserts in Asia.

The Croatian-based food website Taste Atlas published its list of the 100 best desserts in Asia in February. The ranking is based on the reviews of nearly 15,000 diners, food experts, and chefs worldwide , and excludes votes influenced by extreme nationalism.

Flan, or caramel pudding, is the only Vietnamese representative in the top 100, ranking 87th out of 100. This dessert originates from Europe but is now popular worldwide. In Vietnam, flan is a popular and well-loved treat. The soft, caramel-covered pudding is described by Taste Atlas as a "timeless classic dessert," "refined and visually appealing."

The main ingredients of this dish are a mixture of eggs, milk, flavored with vanilla or coffee, and sugar, which are caramelized until brown. When served, the cake is inverted onto a plate, highlighting the rich caramel sauce on top and spilling around it, covering the entire cake in an amber hue. The Vietnamese version of caramel cake often uses condensed milk as an ingredient, which makes the cake thicker.

Leading the top 100 is Dondurma, the famous Turkish ice cream. Japan, South Korea, and Türkiye are the countries with the most dishes mentioned in the top 100. Besides them are representatives from Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines.

The selection criteria for the desserts are based on their popularity among locals and international tourists, their delicious flavor, and their uniqueness. The purpose of announcing the top 100 best desserts in Asia is to promote local delicacies, evoke pride in traditional dishes, and spark curiosity among diners.
