Newspapers no longer 'sit' waiting for readers to come to them for information.

No longer do we wait for newspapers to be published or turn on the TV to catch the news. Instead, readers are changing their habits, reading anytime, anywhere, from waiting for the bus, having breakfast or even before going to an important meeting.

Faced with such changes, the press cannot stay out of the game called digital transformation.

Readers change, the press must change too

Previously, Mr. Thanh Thai (38 years old, living in Tan Mai ward, Bien Hoa city) often read news on websites. But now, he updates current events mainly through social networking sites. His busy work makes him more "difficult" when accessing information.

“Now I mainly read news on my phone. I only stop to read interesting news with videos and photos. I just scroll through long news,” said Mr. Thai.

Such sharing is not uncommon. Modern readers are shifting from “deep” reading to “convenient” and quick reading. They receive information through social networks such as Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, Zalo, where all content competes fiercely for attention in the first few seconds. News now needs to be faster, more concise, but also more vivid.

Master Phan Van Tu, lecturer at the Faculty of Journalism, University of Social Sciences and Humanities, Ho Chi Minh City, said that to adapt to the current period, the press needs to innovate to approach readers appropriately on each platform.

“The issue today is not just how to organize content, but how the press gains public market share with that content,” said journalist Phan Van Tu.

Dong Nai Newspaper - "Wherever you are, we are there"

As one of the few local Party newspapers that proactively converted to digital early, Dong Nai Newspaper has adopted the slogan: "Wherever readers are, we are there"

Dong Nai Newspaper not only attracts readers on the electronic newspaper page but also operates strongly on social networking platforms. In particular, the Facebook fanpage has a blue tick, reaching nearly 260 thousand followers, attracting interactions from a large number of readers. In addition, Dong Nai Newspaper is also present on TikTok, Youtube, Zalo... and produces content suitable for the characteristics of each platform.

Each platform has its own characteristics, so posts are also presented in various forms such as status, TV reports, short videos, photo series, infographics, etc.

Each social media platform of Dong Nai Newspaper has a synchronous coordination, connection and interaction and all contribute to the common goal of reaching and serving readers as quickly and best as possible. Thanks to that, Dong Nai Newspaper is often in the top 5 local Party newspapers with the highest number of visits. Along with that, on the Facebook fanpage, there have been many posts reaching millions of views with many likes and shares from readers.

Along with the expansion of platforms, the team of reporters is also trained to do multimedia and multi-tasking journalism: writing articles, filming, editing clips, designing infographics, writing statuses according to trends and even analyzing data on platforms.

“We consider social media an inseparable part of content distribution. News and articles must be designed specifically for each platform, in terms of format, length, headline, and image selection,” shared journalist Kim Ngan, Head of the Electronic Newspaper Department, Dong Nai Newspaper.

From pen to… multitasking

According to journalist Nguyen Sy Tuyen, Head of the Vietnam News Agency's Resident Office in Dong Nai, with the development of multimedia journalism, journalists and the press public have gradually become accustomed to the method of producing and receiving information with multi-platform journalism. Journalists and press agencies must proactively convey news to readers anytime, anywhere. Therefore, when working at events, Vietnam News Agency reporters are always required to use multimedia including text, photos and videos to convey news on multiple platforms.

“The press public has now changed the way they access information. Therefore, journalists also need to grasp and quickly change the way they produce and convey information. This is a life-and-death “battle” between press agencies and social media platforms today,” journalist Sy Tuyen assessed.

Besides technology, an important issue is still content thinking. According to Master Phan Van Tu, in the context of too many information channels with a lot of news but little official, verified information, the press needs to be a reliable place for readers to turn to. Specifically, the press does not stop at "reflecting information" but must also have intellectual content and values of commentary, criticism, explanation, analysis, and guidance for the public. "These are still the core, classic values of journalism, even though we are having a lot of changes," Master Phan Van Tu affirmed.

Constantly innovating and creating multi-platform content while ensuring the quality and value of information are strong steps for the press to continue to promote its pioneering role on the information front. And adapting to this requirement is not only a technical journey, but also an opportunity to reaffirm the role of journalists in the digital age.
