Duc Giang General Hospital ( Hanoi ) admitted patient BVT (18 years old, from Lao Cai province) in a state of agitation, pale skin and mucous membranes, rapid pulse, low blood pressure, and respiratory failure.
Ultrasound and CT scan results revealed bilateral hemothorax and pneumothorax, with suspected damage to the heart and major blood vessels. Recognizing this as a critical case posing a direct threat to life, the hospital immediately activated a hospital-wide red alert protocol.
Notably, the patient was admitted without any family members accompanying them. With the priority of saving the patient's life, the medical teams promptly implemented emergency procedures and transferred them directly to the operating room.
During the surgery, doctors noted a penetrating chest wound that tore the parenchyma of the upper lobe of the left lung, ruptured the pericardium, and damaged the myocardium in the left ventricle, causing severe hemopericardium.
The thoracic surgery team sutured the heart wound, treated the lung injury, and placed a pleural drain. Simultaneously, the anesthesia and resuscitation team closely monitored hemodynamics using advanced techniques to ensure the patient's safety throughout the surgery.
After surgery, patients are treated with modern pain management methods, including ultrasound-guided intercostal nerve block combined with a self-controlled analgesic system. This effectively reduces pain, minimizes respiratory complications, and allows for faster recovery.
Just four hours after surgery, the patient had their endotracheal tube removed and was breathing steadily on their own.
According to the doctors, the success of the emergency case was the result of urgent and precise coordination between multiple specialties, along with the effectiveness of the red alert protocol in managing critical trauma cases.
