Typhoon Koinu weakens rapidly.

VnExpressVnExpress09/10/2023

Due to interaction with cold air, Typhoon Koinu weakened by three levels to 88 km/h (level 9) this morning and is forecast to dissipate over the sea northeast of Hainan Island (China).

The National Center for Meteorological and Hydrological Forecasting announced this morning that the storm's center was located in the sea south of Guangdong province (China), with maximum wind speeds of 88 km/h. The forecast indicates the storm will move slowly westward at a speed of 5 km/h, weakening into a tropical depression northeast of Hainan Island by 7 am tomorrow.

The storm weakened rapidly due to interaction with cold air from the north. Forecasts indicate that tonight, the cold air will reach the Northeast, then the North Central region and some areas in the Northwest. Northeast winds inland will be strong at level 2-3, and level 3-4 in coastal areas.

The Japan Meteorological Agency said the storm, currently over 80 km/h, will weaken into a tropical depression today before reaching Hainan Island. The Hong Kong Observatory, however, believes Koinu will retain its typhoon strength upon entering Hainan Island and only weaken into a tropical depression in the Gulf of Tonkin.

Due to the influence of the storm, over the next 24 hours, the northwestern area of the South China Sea will experience strong winds of force 6-7, with winds near the storm's center reaching force 8-9. Sea waves will be 2-3 meters high, and 3-5 meters near the storm's center. From tomorrow morning, the Gulf of Tonkin will have waves 2-3 meters high.

On October 5th, the National Steering Committee for Disaster Prevention and Control requested coastal provinces from Quang Ninh to Khanh Hoa to monitor the developments of Typhoon Koinu and prepare response resources.

Koinu is the fourth typhoon to enter the South China Sea this year. Compared to the same period in previous years, typhoons, after entering the South China Sea, tend to head north rather than west, passing over the Philippines and affecting Vietnam. Before Koinu, Typhoon Saola in late August and early September also followed a similar path.

The meteorological agency forecasts that October will see 1-2 typhoons or tropical depressions affecting mainland Vietnam.
