(QBĐT) - Facing the risk of gradually disappearing the black sticky rice variety with high nutritional and economic value, Quang Binh Seed Company Limited has implemented the task of "Conserving and restoring the black sticky rice variety in Le Thuy district". The restored products will be widely supplied, expanded in production, contributing to increasing farmers' income and promoting sustainable agricultural economic development.
Risk of losing precious glutinous rice varieties
The Bru-Van Kieu people in Le Thuy district used to grow the black sticky rice on their fields, but due to increasingly harsh weather conditions, people did not apply fertilization measures, so the yield was low, leading to the rice variety gradually being lost. Since 2016, some households in Ngan Thuy commune have experimented with growing it on flooded fields, with better yields. Up to now, the people have continued to grow the black sticky rice in some villages, such as Khe Giua, Coi Da, Cam Ly, Cua Merc in Ngan Thuy commune (Le Thuy)... with about 10 hectares.
According to research, black sticky rice is considered one of the valuable rice varieties that can adapt to many different ecological zones and has been cultivated by the mountainous people for a long time in many localities in the province. With the characteristics of black-purple, fragrant and nutritious sticky rice grains, black sticky rice is not only a familiar food source but also has the potential to develop into a branded product in the "Hai Gioi" countryside.
On the other hand, with the increasingly developing socio-economic conditions, remote villages are gradually integrating new trends in creating unique products to expand, transform, and serve the development of the service and tourism industries. Therefore, agricultural products of ethnic minorities such as black sticky rice are one of the promising foods that will become attractive "specialty" dishes favored by tourists.
Engineer Le Quoc Viet, Head of Business Department, Quang Binh Agricultural Corporation, Project Manager, shared: From scientific evidence and practical life, in order to have a basis for preserving rare genetic resources and improving product quality, Quang Binh Seed Company Limited has conducted research on restoring black sticky rice varieties in Ngan Thuy commune to preserve high-quality sticky rice varieties, stable in yield, ensuring quality, adapting to production conditions, soil and development of localities in the area.
Sustainable value chain prospects
With the source of seeds that have been grown for many generations by the Bru-Van Kieu ethnic people in Ngan Thuy commune, to accurately assess the actual effectiveness, Quang Binh Seed Company Limited has taken the lead in implementing two production models according to VietGAP standards in Ngan Thuy and Duy Ninh communes (Quang Ninh), each model has a scale of 4 hectares. This is a step to test the stability of the seeds and help local people access advanced farming processes, improve productivity and product quality.
Farmer Nguyen Van Duc in Cua Merc village, Ngan Thuy commune said that not only is sticky rice eaten regularly by the people, but it is also very popular and has a good price. The model of growing sticky rice with the application of science and technology gives better results than the traditional method of the people before. The rice plants grow quickly and have a higher survival rate. Producing sticky rice with good yield and quality, his family will expand the cultivation area of this sticky rice variety.
The research team conducted investigations, surveys, collected documents, took seed samples and evaluated the current status of black sticky rice production in traditional growing areas. Based on the collected data, the research team built and recorded the basic characteristics of black sticky rice from the original source materials. After the process of restoration and selection of seeds, a super-original seed source will be created, ensuring the preservation of the valuable characteristics of black sticky rice, such as: small grains, characteristic purple-black color, fragrant sticky rice and high nutritional content...; from there, continue to expand the original seed to serve mass production.
In January 2022, Duc Ninh Dong Agricultural Service Cooperative (Dong Hoi City) implemented a pilot planting model of DH6 sticky rice variety (Cam Pe sticky rice variety in Thanh Hoa since 2009) with 14 households participating on an area of 5 hectares. According to the assessment, this variety has a short growth period, hard stem, good lodging resistance, concentrated tillering, high percentage of solid grains; stable yield of 35-40 quintals/ha, if intensively cultivated well, it can reach 50 quintals/ha. |
The mission is also focusing on supporting consumption and building brands. Linking with businesses to purchase products helps ensure stable output for farmers, avoiding the situation of "good harvest, low price". At the same time, the unit has focused on labels, packaging and traceability stamps, creating a foundation for promoting products to domestic and foreign markets.
When the mission is successfully implemented, the purebred black sticky rice variety with guaranteed quality will be widely replicated, helping to improve economic efficiency. Quang Binh Seed Company Limited plays an important role in supplying seeds, providing technical support and product consumption, contributing to creating a sustainable value chain for black sticky rice products.
According to the assessment of the representative of the Department of Science and Technology, the development of a process to restore the black sticky rice variety not only helps preserve rare genetic resources but also provides a scientific basis for breeding and developing other native varieties in the future. This is an important step in preserving and promoting the typical agricultural values of Quang Binh, while opening up opportunities for sustainable agricultural economic development for local people.
