Protecting Ham Yen orange area

Việt NamViệt Nam20/08/2024

The area of citrus oranges decreased.

Considered one of the areas with the best quality of oranges in Ham Yen district, but currently orange growers in Yen Lam commune are worried that one day the orange trees will no longer be with the people here. Because every year the area of orange trees is shrinking due to disease and gradually dying.

Mr. Bui Quang Trung, village 68, Yen Lam commune has been involved in orange growing for decades. With 9 hectares of oranges, each year during the harvest season, Mr. Trung earns hundreds of millions of dong. But that was many years ago, and now his family no longer has any orange trees. According to Mr. Trung, in the past 3 years, the orange trees have had yellow leaves, the oranges have shriveled, then withered and died. Mr. Trung treated the soil of the dead orange trees, sprinkled lime powder, used decomposed manure and replanted them. In the second cycle, despite spending a lot of money on good fertilizer and taking care of them, the new orange trees only grew for 2-3 years and then had the same symptoms of yellow leaves, dry roots and gradually died. To ensure income, Mr. Trung had to replace them with four-season lemon trees.

Officers of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development support people in Yen Lam (Ham Yen) to grow oranges according to organic standards.

According to the review results of Yen Lam Commune People's Committee, in the past 3 years, 75 hectares of orange trees have died. Comrade Nguyen Ngoc Lam, Vice Chairman of Yen Lam Commune People's Committee shared that orange trees are a traditional crop and also the most valuable economic crop, but the area is currently decreasing every year, causing many orange growers to worry. Faced with the situation of many orange gardens dying, the commune reported to the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Agricultural Service Center, and the District Fruit Tree Center to inspect and find out the cause of the orange trees being infected with disease, and support people in preventing and controlling pests and protecting the orange gardens.

In Phu Luu commune, the orange acreage has also been continuously decreasing. According to the report of Phu Luu commune People's Committee in 2015, the whole commune had about 2,000 hectares of oranges but currently there are less than 900 hectares. Comrade Ma Van Huy, Chairman of Phu Luu commune People's Committee said: pests, diseases, unfavorable weather and erratic prices are the main reasons for the sharp decrease in the area of this crop in the commune in recent years. In addition, the orange trees in Phu Luu were mainly planted 20, 25 years ago, are old and have reached the replacement cycle, which is also the reason why the orange acreage in this locality is no longer as golden as in previous years.

In the report of Ham Yen District People's Committee on July 24, the whole district only has 4,000 hectares of oranges left, reaching 80% of the plan, of which 3,700 hectares are being harvested. According to the leader of Ham Yen District Fruit Tree Center, after inspection, many orange gardens showed signs of poor development, wilting, and gradual death, with the risk of further decline.

Efforts to maintain the brand of pomelo

In Decision No. 358/2021 of the People's Committee of Tuyen Quang province on approving the Project on Restructuring the Agricultural Sector for the period 2021 - 2025 and orientation to 2030, the orange tree is still one of the main crops. The orange tree area will remain stable at over 8,300 hectares with an output of over 102 thousand tons of fruit/year. However, in reality, the current orange tree area is only 4,000 hectares.

According to the District Fruit Tree Center, from 2021 to now, when the area of orange trees in the district began to die and gradually decrease, the unit has worked with many specialized agencies such as: Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, Department of Science and Technology, Tan Trao University, Plant Protection Institute, Department of Cultivation (Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development)... to survey and assess the level of disease infection of orange trees. At the same time, coordinate the implementation of many topics and projects such as planting Vetiver grass to detoxify the soil, organic orange growing care process, quality orange production care process...

During the inspection of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development on the progress of the project on restructuring the agricultural sector in Ham Yen district in mid-July, the leaders of the Provincial Agricultural Extension Center and the Provincial Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection all affirmed that they will continue to connect and invite leading experts to conduct field inspections, take samples for analysis, and research to find the most optimal solution to effectively protect the existing orange area. On that basis, support the production of disease-free, quality seedlings to serve the needs of the people. In the immediate future, to control and limit the spread of diseases on oranges, experts recommend: For orange areas that are old, infected with pests and diseases, orange growers need to cut them down and replace them with other types of trees to improve the soil, limit replanting oranges in the second cycle, or trees of the same species. Because in reality, most of the orange areas die when replanted in the second cycle, but they only grow for a very short time and then fall into a state of poor growth, gradual death, causing great economic losses. Orange growers also need to proactively change farming methods, expand the orange area according to organic standards to ensure product quality, improve the soil, and increase the life of the plants.

Comrade Do Van Hoa, Vice Chairman of Ham Yen District People's Committee affirmed: In addition to efforts to protect the area of navel oranges, the district also encourages localities, farm owners, and gardeners to choose suitable and high-value crops to develop based on the soil conditions of each region, such as apples and dragon fruit, to diversify agricultural products and ensure crop rotation, increasing economic value. Vice Chairman of Ham Yen District People's Committee Do Van Hoa believes that with the efforts of the agricultural sector and the acumen of the people, Ham Yen will maintain the navel orange brand and become a valuable fruit orchard.
