Cucurella shone brightly as he neutralized Yamal in Chelsea's 3-0 victory over Barcelona. |
From a young talent who was pushed aside, Cucurella is now a key player for Chelsea, having just won the Man of the Match award for "shutting down" Lamine Yamal, making a significant contribution to "The Blues'" dominant 3-0 victory over Barcelona on the morning of November 26th.
Let's rewind to the summer of 2020. When Jordi Alba needed a backup on the left flank, Barcelona had two options: keep Marc Cucurella – a La Masia product who had just shone at Eibar – or sign Junior Firpo from Real Betis for €18 million.
Barcelona's management chose Firpo and simultaneously sold Cucurella to Getafe for only 12 million euros (after buying him back from Eibar for just 4 million euros). This decision, a few years later, became a prime example of a strategic mistake.
After joining Barca, Firpo only played 21 La Liga matches in two seasons (2019/20 and 2020/21), scoring 2 goals and contributing to the Copa del Rey victory. However, he failed to impress coaches Ronald Koeman and Xavi, and was sold to Leeds United in 2021 for €15 million.
In the Premier League, Firpo experienced both highs and lows. He helped Leeds avoid relegation in the 2021/22 season, but witnessed the team's relegation to the Championship in 2023. Despite a good season in the English Championship in 2024/25 (4 goals, 10 assists, contributing to promotion), he will still leave on a free transfer in the summer of 2025, returning to Real Betis.
Currently, at 29 years old, Firpo is only a rotation option at Betis. He has played in 8 La Liga matches this season (1 goal), but rarely starts and has only had a few minutes playing in Europe. His career has not been as successful as expected. And now, Firpo represents the Dominican Republic instead of Spain.
Meanwhile, Cucurella has risen to become one of the best left-backs in the world today.

Cucurella continues to prove why he is one of the most frustrating defenders in the world. |
Cucurella exploded onto the scene after leaving Barca. At Getafe (2020-2022), he played 76 games, scored 4 goals, and became a key player under manager Jose Bordalas. In 2022, Brighton signed him for €18 million, and Cucurella quickly became a star. He is a versatile player (left-back, winger), contributing to Brighton's top 6 finish in the 2022/23 Premier League season.
Chelsea didn't hesitate to spend 65 million euros (potentially rising to 70 million) to bring him in the summer of 2022, despite initial criticism over the high price.
Under Enzo Maresca, Cucurella transformed, becoming Chelsea's number one left-back and winning the FIFA Club World Cup 2025. He is a key player for the Spanish national team, starting at left-back in their Euro 2024 winning campaign.
Cucurella was the "hero" in Chelsea's 3-0 victory over Barca. He effectively neutralized Yamal, played a major role in the opening goal, and even caused Ronald Araujo to receive a second red card for a brutal foul in the 42nd minute.
Marca argues that Barcelona's decision to sell Cucurella for €12 million to buy Firpo for €18 million was one of the club's biggest mistakes in the last half-decade. It's a costly lesson for La Masia and Barca on how to retain and utilize talent.
