Araujo is unlikely to stay at Barcelona next season. |
According to Sport , the Uruguayan player is on the list of players to be sold by Barca's board this summer. Barcelona's top brass were unhappy with Araujo's performance against Inter Milan in the second leg of the Champions League semi-final.
Although the club has left the door open to keeping the Uruguayan, financial pressures have prompted Barcelona's board to reconsider if attractive offers come in. At 26, Araujo is still highly regarded for his European experience and development potential.
He remains one of the most notable defenders in the summer transfer market. In that context, Araujo sent a message via social media on June 16. He posted a picture of himself wearing a Barcelona shirt, with a gesture pointing to the ground, as if to implicitly affirm: "I will stay here".
However, Mundo Deportivo said the Uruguayan's future does not depend on his subjective will. Earlier this year, Araujo signed a new contract with Barcelona until 2031, but this contract has a release clause of only 65 million euros.
Many see the deal as a way for Araujo to find a new club in the summer if he fails to establish himself as a starter. Araujo has made costly mistakes in the last two years, with the Uruguayan making errors in the Champions League knockout stages in two consecutive seasons (2023/24 and 2024/25), costing Barcelona their dream of reaching the final of the competition.
