Seven young men arrested for hacking Facebook accounts and stealing 8 billion VND.

On January 28th, information from the Cyber ​​Security and High-Tech Crime Prevention Department of the Quang Binh Provincial Police indicated that the unit, in coordination with other professional departments and the Dong Hoi City Police and Quang Ninh District Police, had successfully cracked a case and arrested a group of seven people specializing in hacking social media accounts to commit fraud and steal property.

Seven young men were arrested, including: Vo Van Hung, Nguyen Ngoc Hieu, Nguyen Xuan Kien, Nguyen Van Toai, Nguyen Tung Lam (all born in 2006); Nguyen Van Sang (born in 2004), Vo Van Anh (born in 2003), all residing in Quang Ninh district, Quang Binh province.

Around the beginning of 2023, members of this group went online to research how to illegally hijack the Facebook accounts of many people nationwide.

Then they change the password, hack into the account, and use the compromised Facebook account to send messages asking to borrow money or to extort money.

They also created about 20 different bank accounts and purchased many more "burner" bank accounts online to conceal the receipt of fraudulent money from victims.

The total estimated transaction volume in the bank accounts used by the suspect is approximately 8 billion VND.

Regarding the hacking of Facebook accounts to steal assets, previously, in June 2023, the Da Nang City Police also arrested a group including Nguyen Quang Duc (28 years old, residing in Trieu Tai commune, Trieu Phong district, Quang Tri province), Tran Le Quang Vu (27 years old), Le Phuoc Thanh (33 years old), Nguyen Xuan Dung (33 years old, all residing in Quang Tri town, Quang Tri province) and Tran Viet Long (30 years old, residing in Ban Gian commune, Lap Thach district, Vinh Phuc province).

Through questioning, the group initially confessed that from October 2022 until their arrest, they had hacked and taken control of many people's Facebook accounts, then impersonated them to commit fraud and steal property.

Using this scheme, they defrauded over 500 victims nationwide, appropriating nearly 5 billion VND. All the stolen money was used by the perpetrators for online gaming and Bitcoin trading.
