On March 6th, the National Center for Hydro-Meteorological Forecasting announced that on March 5th, intense heat prevailed across a wide area of central provinces. The highest temperature in central Vietnam reached 39.9 degrees Celsius in Tuong Duong (Nghe An). Additionally, temperatures exceeding 39 degrees Celsius were also recorded in Ha Tinh City (Ha Tinh province) at 39.4 degrees Celsius and Huong Khe (Ha Tinh province) at 39.1 degrees Celsius.

Widespread hot and intensely hot weather is also occurring from Thanh Hoa to Thua Thien-Hue, with maximum temperatures commonly reaching 36-38 degrees Celsius. The lowest relative humidity is 40-50%.

Forecasts indicate that on March 6th, the area from Quang Binh to Quang Ngai will experience hot weather with maximum temperatures generally ranging from 35 to 37 degrees Celsius and minimum relative humidity of 45 to 50%. The heat will gradually subside from March 7th onwards.

Due to the effects of hot weather combined with low humidity, there is a risk of explosions and fires in residential areas due to increased electricity demand, and an increased risk of forest fires.

In addition, hot weather can cause dehydration, exhaustion, and heatstroke in people who are exposed to high temperatures for extended periods.

Quick update at 12 PM on March 6th: Northern Vietnam welcomes cold air, Central Vietnam experiences hot weather.

According to meteorological experts, the widespread and intense heatwave in Central Vietnam at this time is unusual and rare, as the dry season in this region usually begins in May or June. Thus, this year's heatwave has arrived about two months earlier than the multi-year average. The current heatwave is due to the impact of the El Niño phenomenon.

In 2023, Tuong Duong (Nghe An province) also recorded a heatwave of 44.2 degrees Celsius, the highest temperature ever recorded in Vietnam.

However, according to experts, since El Nino is predicted to weaken in May and potentially shift to the cold La Nina phase in June; and since the peak of the hot season in Central Vietnam usually lasts from June to August, it is likely that the heat in Central Vietnam this year will be less intense than in 2023.
