Bat Xat - A painting of the rainy season

Việt NamViệt Nam09/05/2024

If you're looking for a travel destination that's both majestic with its mountains and hills, and romantic with its lush greenery and flowers, then Bat Xat district is a worthwhile place to visit during the rainy season.

Unlike the flat, open rice fields of the lowlands, the rice paddies in the highlands of Bat Xat - Lao Cai are depicted as steps leading to the sky, creating a stunning landscape.

When the first summer rains begin, it's time for the villagers to go down to the fields to plow and cultivate, awakening the barren lands after the cold winter days to prepare for a new crop. Terraced rice fields during the rainy season are a "tourism specialty" throughout the highland villages of Lao Cai. In Bat Xat, you'll see terraced rice fields winding around the hillsides everywhere. Water flows tirelessly from one terrace to another, winding through jagged rocks, into each patch of field, until the water reaches the surface, reflecting a kaleidoscope of colors: the yellow of the soil, the brown of the silt, the azure blue of the sky, the white of the clouds mixed with the white of the morning mist, and the vibrant red of the sunset… All of this creates an incredibly beautiful picture of the rainy season. For hundreds of years, these rice fields have been created by the diligent hands of ethnic minority farmers, known as "earth-footed sculptors." They are all Hmong, Dao, and Ha Nhi people who have lived on this land of Bat Xat for many years.

The terraced rice fields, distributed throughout all the communes, most notably the The Pa valley in the two communes of Y Ty and Ngai Thau, and some communes such as Muong Hum, Den Sang, and Den Thang, are all linked to the history of each ethnic group living there and are the result of labor, accumulated experience, and creativity in cultivating wet rice on high hills. During the rainy season, the villages of Bat Xat resemble a land straight out of a fairy tale, with many bright colors standing out amidst the majestic, pristine mountains and forests.

Visiting Bat Xat during the rainy season, tourists will surely never forget the serene beauty of a peaceful countryside hidden in a hazy mist, with white clouds drifting by, and in the distance, shimmering terraced rice fields under the gentle afternoon sun.

In addition, visitors to Bat Xat can experience the rich and colorful highland culture of various ethnic groups, such as the cuisine of the Ha Nhi people, the Mong ethnic festival, the wedding ceremonies of the Dao and Giay ethnic groups, etc. Each ethnic group has its own unique way of life, but they all share the common practice of cultivating wet rice and using buffaloes for plowing. This is because the terraced rice fields here are small and narrow, arranged in layers winding along the hillsides and steep, winding roads, hidden in the early morning mist.

Visitors to the highland villages of Bat Xat during this time will have the opportunity to admire the pristine beauty of the terraced rice fields, which resemble paintings. In particular, they can experience firsthand the vibrant beauty of the The Pa terraced rice fields during the rainy season.

The The Pa terraced rice field heritage complex is not only an attractive tourist destination, but also holds many cultural and historical values, and has been ranked as a national scenic spot by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
