Is it okay for a 5 year old child to have a heart rate of 110-120 beats/minute?

My daughter is over 5 years old. These past few days, I noticed that her heart beats fast. I tried to measure it and when she sits normally it is 110-120 beats/minute. When she sleeps it is 90-98 beats/minute. Doctor, is my daughter's heart rate high or abnormal? I tried to measure her older sister (8 years old) and her heart rate is only around 75 beats/minute. I hope the doctor can advise me!

Hello!

Based on the information you provided, here is some information for your reference:

Normal heart rate in children

Children's heart rate varies with age and physical condition (resting, active, sleeping...). Below are the average heart rate levels by age:

- Children from 1-3 years old: 80-130 beats/minute.

- Children from 3-5 years old: 80-120 beats/minute.

- Children from 6-10 years old: 70-110 beats/minute.

Factors that can affect heart rate, causing a child's heart rate to increase due to physical activity (running, playing); emotions (anxiety, nervousness, fear); fever or dehydration; some cardiovascular diseases or metabolic disorders.

My 5-year-old child's heart rate when sitting is normally 110-120 beats/minute and when sleeping is 90-98 beats/minute. These numbers are within the normal range for children of the same age, but a bit close to the high end of the range.

Although your 5-year-old's heart rate is still within normal limits, you should pay attention if your child has the following unusual symptoms:

- Baby feels tired, short of breath, or dizzy.

- Baby complains of chest pain or feels nervous, heart pounding.

- The baby's heart rate remains high (over 120 beats/minute) even when resting or sleeping.

- Baby has signs of fever, dehydration, or other illness.

Therefore, the doctor recommends that you continue to monitor your baby's heart rate in different states (rest, sleep, activity); make sure your baby gets enough rest, drinks enough water and is not stressed. If your baby's heart rate continues to be abnormally high or is accompanied by worrying symptoms, you should take your baby to see a pediatrician or cardiologist for a more thorough examination.

Wish you and your family good health!
