Gathering the best
In preparation for the printing and launch of "Hue Studies - Volume 10," scheduled for early 2026, the Hue Research Center is currently finalizing the editing of the articles. The editing process is meticulous to ensure the academic quality and accuracy of each document.
Researcher Nguyen Huu Chau Phan stated: “The large volume and diverse topics make the editing process quite complex. However, the Editorial Board is still making every effort to complete it, maintaining the academic integrity and spirit of the book series “Hue Studies” through each edition.”

“Hue Studies – Volume 10” is a monumental work with over 1,300 pages, compiling more than 80 elaborate research papers by approximately 70 authors from Vietnam and abroad. The research papers on Hue cover many fields: culture, history, architecture, and society, and are associated with the names of researchers from Vietnam and abroad, as well as some well-known researchers of Hue, such as: Nguyen Huu Dinh, Nguyen The Anh, Nguyen Huu Thong, Nguyen Xuan Hoa, Tran Dai Vinh, Phan Hanh Hai, Nguyen Anh Huy, Nguyen Huu Chau Phan, Andrée Viollis, Louis Roubaud, Bruce Weigl… The publication is divided into 7 parts: Looking back and reflecting; research; outstanding figures and masterpieces; documents; collected materials…
Hue Studies is also one of the very few domestic journals that publishes lengthy research papers and studies, a valuable asset for researchers. Each article is carefully selected, ensuring academic value and alignment with the spirit of each section, reflecting an effort to extend the journey of preserving, researching, and disseminating the unique cultural and historical values of Hue.
Many articles are elaborate research works spanning hundreds of pages, such as: "The Historical Context of Vietnam Before Christ and the Trung Sisters' Uprising"; "Gia Hoi in the Past"; "Thanh Ha and Bao Vinh Port Towns - Ups and Downs"; "The Colors of Life in Hue in the Years 1957-1962"; "Dieu De Quoc Tu" Temple; "National Treasures in the Ancient Capital of Hue"...
The Hue Studies Journal is not a periodical publication; it is only published when sufficient content and other conditions are met. Launched in 1999, the Hue Studies Journal has published nine issues to date, containing 395 articles and a total of 3,776 pages. This is truly a massive, comprehensive, and valuable research work on the history and culture of Hue, and is expected to be a worthy scientific book to continue the legacy of the Hue Historical and Cultural Association.
According to researcher Nguyen Xuan Hoa, "Hue Studies" selects articles focusing on new and in-depth research; explores memories, recollections, and anecdotes about Hue as historical and cultural data, compiled in the "Gathering Sand and Stones" section; publishes memoirs and scholarly works that have not been published for a long time; and provides insights through books published in Vietnam and abroad in the "Book News" section…
Preserve diligently.
The Hue Research Center was founded on May 7, 1995, in Hue. The center was founded by several researchers in Hue, including: Nguyen Huu Dinh, Nguyen Xuan Hoa, Tran Hoai, Nguyen Mien, Nguyen Huu Chau Phan, Ho Tan Phan, Vinh Phoi, Doan Van Quynh, and Tran Dai Vinh; among them, the founding director was the veteran scientist Nguyen Huu Dinh.
After the death of Mr. Nguyen Huu Dinh, his son, Nguyen Huu Chau Phan, dedicated all his efforts to the Hue Research Center and the Hue Research Journal. Volume 9 was published in 2021, when Mr. Phan was 85 years old. Racing against time, he immediately began working on Volume 10. This may be the last book he will edit, so he devoted all his efforts to compiling all the valuable articles submitted to the Center. Despite illness and hospitalization, he continued his work whenever possible.
NNC Chau Phan shared: “I have poured all my energy into this publication. My monthly pension is only about 7 million VND, and I dedicate it all to making this book. From typing and layout to editing each article, we have completed about 90% of the work. There were times when my health didn't allow it, and I thought I couldn't continue, but now I feel somewhat reassured. From now until the book is published, there are only a few final steps left to complete.”
The selection criteria for articles in "Hue Studies" follow the principle of "not saying anything wrong and daring to say what is true," covering everything about Hue and its culture. The team of hundreds of collaborators worldwide are people who love Hue and its culture, including Vietnamese people living abroad and foreign authors researching Hue and Vietnam. This is because Hue culture is not confined to Hue but has spread since Hue was once the imperial capital.
Operating on a non-profit basis and adhering to its original principles, the "Hue Studies" journal does not accept sponsorships or advertising; its members fund its publication themselves. The founding members of the Hue Studies Center also do not receive royalties. With a print run of 500-1,000 copies per issue, the Hue Studies Center must ensure the quality of its articles to gain readership. All issues sell out, and even libraries abroad regularly subscribe to the "Hue Studies" journal.
