The three districts of Ba Tri, Binh Dai and Thanh Phu ( Ben Tre ) and a 65 km long coastal area are planned as a 50,000 ha sea encroachment area, helping Ben Tre province develop its economy.

The information was announced by Mr. Duong Van Phuc, Director of Ben Tre Department of Planning and Investment, at a press conference to inform about the investment promotion conference in the province on the morning of September 26. The sea encroachment project is part of the provincial planning for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050, approved by the Prime Minister late last year.

According to the plan, Ben Tre has 3 economic zones including the eastern coast (Ba Tri, Binh Dai, Thanh Phu and the sea space belonging to Ben Tre province with a length of 65 km), the area north of Ham Luong river (Ben Tre city, Chau Thanh and Giong Trom) and the south of Ham Luong river (Mo Cay Bac, Mo Cay Nam and Cho Lach).

The eastern reclaimed area is identified as the driving force for development, including Binh Dai district with an area of 21,000 hectares, Thanh Phu district with an area of 15,000 hectares, and Ba Tri district with an area of 14,000 hectares. The reclaimed area will be invested with a seaport to accommodate large-capacity ships.

"In the economic zone facing the eastern sea, priority will be given to developing the fisheries, energy, transportation, logistics, trade, services and tourism sectors," said Mr. Phuc.

To create a premise for the coastal economic zone, the province is currently focusing on implementing a 53km coastal road project with a total investment of more than VND13,000 billion, to be completed by the end of next year. Ba Lai 8 Bridge - one of the important projects of the coastal road with a total investment of more than VND2,200 billion - will start construction in early October.

Early next month, Ben Tre will hold a conference to call for and attract investment into the province.

Ben Tre is located in the Mekong Delta, with an area of 2,380 km2 and a population of over 1.3 million (in 2022), ranking 28th in the country. In recent years, the province has had good economic growth, averaging 6-7% per year. GRDP per capita in 2023 will reach 53 million VND per person, an increase of 8.13% over the previous year.
