Can Tho Central General Hospital: Fulfilling its role as a final-line hospital in the Mekong Delta

Currently, as a tertiary hospital under the Ministry of Health in the Mekong Delta region, Can Tho Central General Hospital receives from 2,000 to 2,500 outpatients for examination and treatment every day. The number of inpatients also fluctuates from 1,500 to 1,700 per day.

On May 12, Can Tho Central General Hospital held a ceremony to celebrate its 20th anniversary (2005 - 2025). Attending the ceremony were Vice Chairwoman of Can Tho City People's Committee Nguyen Thi Ngoc Diep; representatives of the Department of Health of many provinces in the Mekong Delta; leaders of hospitals in Can Tho City and Ho Chi Minh City; and 350 delegates who are officials, leading experts, excellent doctors, and medical staff of Can Tho Central General Hospital through the years.

Can Tho Central General Hospital was established under Decision No. 1694 of the Ministry of Health on the basis of changing the name from Can Tho General Hospital. A start with many expectations for the people of the Mekong Delta when there is a hospital under the Ministry located in the West.

In the period of 2008 - 2010, Can Tho Central General Hospital quickly went into stable operation. The important milestone was in November 2017, the most complete, modern and specialized Cardiovascular Center in the Mekong Delta was officially established with 3 specialties: Internal Cardiology, Interventional Cardiology, and Cardiac Surgery.

Since its inception, the Center has quickly asserted its key role in emergency and treatment of complex cardiovascular diseases, contributing to significantly reducing the burden on upper-level facilities. International cooperation has become a bright spot in recent years, such as cooperation with the United States in free heart surgery and surgery for foot deformities for poor patients in the Mekong Delta; cooperation with Japan in cervical spine surgery; with Australia in trauma emergency care; with Germany in arthroscopy...

Can Tho Central General Hospital strives to make kidney transplantation a routine technique.

In 2024, the hospital's revenue will reach about 1,870 billion VND, 4 times higher than the initial period. Thanks to that, the hospital will not only create a positive working environment but also significantly improve the income and life of staff and doctors.

Vice Chairwoman of Can Tho City People's Committee Nguyen Thi Ngoc Diep presented the Certificate of Merit for outstanding achievements from the Ministry of Health to Mr. Nguyen Minh Vu, Director of Can Tho Central General Hospital.

After 20 years of establishment, developing from 804 initial staff, the total number of staff of the hospital is now 1,487 people; of which 65.55% of doctors are postgraduates. Currently, as the final hospital under the Ministry of Health in the Mekong Delta region, Can Tho Central General Hospital receives from 2,000 to 2,500 outpatients for examination and treatment every day. The number of inpatients also fluctuates from 1,500 to 1,700 per day.

Can Tho Central General Hospital has been implementing a project to expand the area by 3.5 hectares in the period 2025-2030. Expand and specialize the units. Especially focus on developing organ transplantation techniques, in which, the goal is to perform the first liver transplant in 2026.

Dr. Pham Thanh Phong, Deputy Director of Can Tho Central General Hospital, said that the hospital is striving to become a special-class hospital according to the standards of the Ministry of Health; making kidney transplantation a routine technique, and soon implementing liver transplantation so that liver transplantation can be performed by 2026.
