Specialist Doctor I Tran The Thang, Director of Operations of Hanoi - Dong Nai Eye Hospital, said that the program's participants are elderly people with cataracts, with valid health insurance cards, and members of the Dong Nai Province Elderly Association.
To participate in the program, eligible seniors can register directly with the hospital by calling 0251.8823.288 or 0812.557.335. Registration and surgery time is from now until June 30, 2025.
After registering for the program, the elderly will be examined and evaluated by the hospital's ophthalmologists. If qualified, they will be assigned to have surgery at the hospital (address: 418 Pham Van Thuan Street, Ward 3, Tam Hiep Ward, Bien Hoa City).
According to Dr. Thang, each surgery lasts about 5 minutes. After surgery, most patients go home the same day without having to stay in the hospital for monitoring.
According to statistics from the Ministry of Health , Vietnam currently has about 2 million blind people. The leading cause of blindness is cataract (accounting for more than 66%). Cataracts are common in the elderly. Due to many different reasons such as family economic conditions, limited awareness, unfavorable access to medical services or medical facilities lacking equipment, machinery, and ophthalmologists, many patients do not have the opportunity to have artificial lens replacement surgery.
Cataract surgery is a solution to improve vision and enhance the quality of life for the elderly. Artificial lenses can last a lifetime without needing replacement, as long as there are no complications.
