The Dutch midfielder was pushed to the brink of leaving Camp Nou three years ago, before the situation temporarily calmed down after the arrival of coach Hansi Flick. However, according to AS , the mystery surrounding De Jong's future still remains.
De Jong's contract expires on June 30, 2026. Under a new policy proposed by sporting director Deco, Barcelona will not let any player start the new season with less than two years left on his contract. That means De Jong must renew this summer.
President Joan Laporta has repeatedly claimed to have a “verbal agreement” with De Jong. The player himself confirmed this in an interview in the Netherlands on June 8. However, negotiations remain at a complete standstill.
The problem is that Barcelona don’t know who to talk to. De Jong has parted ways with his long-time agent Ali Dursun. He is now supported only by a Dutch lawyer who does not have a FIFA player agent license. This leaves the club without an official contact to negotiate a contract.
As for De Jong, he prioritizes staying at Barcelona and is willing to take a pay cut to help the club balance its salary fund according to La Liga's 1:1 rule. But as long as de Jong does not have a legal representative sitting on the other side of the negotiating table, Barcelona can only wait.
"An important signing, a quality player, but everything stalled because no one knew where to start," AS concluded.
