Arrested for using ChatGPT to spread fake news

According to SCMP , Gansu police have arrested a man named Hong for allegedly using ChatGPT to fabricate false information about a train accident that killed nine people.

After discovering the fake news on April 25, authorities found multiple versions of the accident posted by 25 separate accounts on the Baijiahao microblogging platform, which had been viewed more than 15,000 times. Hong used ChatGPT to edit the content and location of the accident to bypass Baijiahao’s duplicate checking system.

Police arrested Hong under a “deep synthesis” law that China introduced in January. “Deep synthesis” includes using AI (artificial intelligence) to generate text, images, videos or other media. The law prohibits the use of AI to spread fake news.

Even though ChatGPT is banned in China, many people still use VPNs to access this chatbot.

Through the reports, police were able to track down a company owned by Hong. He admitted to using ChatGPT to create fake news stories to make money through traffic. Hong was charged with “disturbing public order” and faces a maximum sentence of five years in prison. But in particularly serious cases, the charge can carry a sentence of up to 10 years. In 2013, the Chinese government expanded its scope to include people posting and spreading false rumors online.

As ChatGPT has grown, China has voiced concerns that the unregulated development and use of “deep synthesis technology” could lead to criminal activities such as online fraud or defamation. In February, Chinese police warned citizens to be wary of “rumors” generated by ChatGPT.

Chinese authorities have sought to stay ahead of the technology by drafting laws to govern AI and restrict the use of deepfakes. The arrests represent an effort by Chinese authorities to regulate and control the use of AI as the technology becomes more advanced.
