Sampdoria's fortunes have plummeted. |
This is the first time in history that Sampdoria has been relegated from Serie B. The 0-0 draw with Juve Stabia on May 14th marked a sad end for the team from Genoa.
Sampdoria has been struggling financially for years, but nobody thought they would fall into this situation. Sampdoria, who won the Italian championship in 1991 with a star-studded squad, have been playing in Serie B since being relegated at the end of the 2022/23 Serie A season.
In June 2023, former Italy World Cup-winning player Andrea Pirlo was appointed head coach, but he was unable to lead the team back to Serie A after failing in the promotion play-offs.
Previously, in May 2023, Sampdoria's management called Pirlo "an important part of the project," but after only three matches in the new season, with two defeats and one draw, the coach was sacked.
Andrea Sottil replaced Pirlo but was also sacked in October 2024 after winning only 4 out of 14 matches, making way for Leonardo Semplici.
With the team already in the relegation zone, a 0-3 home defeat against Frosinone at the end of March became the final straw for the fans. After the match at the Luigi Ferraris stadium, the bus carrying Semplici and the Sampdoria players was pelted with stones and flares by angry fans.
Semplici was sacked in April, and Alberico Evani became the team's fourth coach this season, tasked with keeping them in Serie B.
Evani received support from club legend Attilio Lombardo as his assistant, along with unofficial contributions from another Sampdoria icon, Roberto Mancini.
Evani had a promising start with a 1-0 victory against Cittadella, a team also struggling to avoid relegation. However, three draws, one defeat, and only one win since then have seen Sampdoria relegated to Serie C for the first time in the club's 78-year history.
