On November 19th, Ms. Dang Thi Viet Ha, deputy head of the Education and Training Department of Cam Le district (Da Nang city), confirmed that a parent had been scammed out of 55 million VND when registering their child to participate in an online handwriting competition.
Accordingly, this parent has a child attending Ngo Quyen Primary School. Upon seeing an online calligraphy competition titled "Together with Eras and the Vietnam Calligraphy Club, we honor the art of beautiful handwriting through the 2024 Vietnam Calligraphy Competition with the theme 'Childhood for Children'," this parent registered their child to participate.
Someone claiming to be an organizer of the competition contacted us, asking us to transfer money so that students could participate. Initially, it was just a few hundred thousand dong, then several million dong.
After several transactions, this parent transferred a total of 55 million VND to the instructor. However, their child was still unable to pass the calligraphy exam, and the parent lost contact with this person.
Ms. Ha said that after realizing they had been scammed, the parent reported the incident to the school.
The Cam Le District Department of Education and Training has requested school principals to disseminate information to parents and students to raise awareness of online crime.
At the same time, special attention should be paid to scams through online contests, requests for money transfers, personal information, or links to websites of unknown origin.
The leaders of the Cam Le District Department of Education and Training also noted that schools need to guide parents and students to carefully check the authenticity of programs and only participate in competitions organized by reputable agencies and organizations.
According to our investigation, the contest with the same name as the one reported by the parents ended in July 2024. Recently, content about the contest has been copied and posted on social media sites to deceive parents. The organizers of this contest have also issued warnings to parents to be wary of online scams.
