Falling while climbing a tree to pick lychees, a woman suffered a severed spinal cord and was paralyzed in both legs.

Neurosurgeons and anesthesiologists at Tuyen Quang General Hospital have just performed spinal surgery on patient D.TT (female, 45 years old; residing in Chiem Hoa District, Tuyen Quang ) who fell while climbing a tree to pick lychees.

The broken spine was adjusted and fixed with screws by doctors.

According to the family of patient Đ.TT, while climbing a tree to pick lychees in the garden, she fell from a height of about 3 meters, her back hitting the hard ground. After the fall, the patient had severe pain in her lower back, completely lost movement and feeling in both legs (complete paralysis of both legs), and was taken to the emergency room at Tuyen Quang Provincial General Hospital by her family.

At the hospital, the CT scan results showed that the patient had a fracture of the T12 vertebrae, with the lower part slipping backward at a very severe level 4. The patient was consulted by an interdisciplinary team and transferred to the Department of Neurosurgery at Tuyen Quang General Hospital for treatment.

Specialist Doctor Nguyen Quang Minh, Head of the Department of Neurosurgery (Tuyen Quang General Hospital), said that on May 28, patient T. underwent emergency surgery. During the surgery, doctors carefully examined the patient's injuries and found that when he fell, the patient's spinal cord had been completely severed and could not be saved. Doctors could only adjust the spine to its anatomical position (straight axis), fix it firmly with screws, so that the patient could later sit and move around in a wheelchair.

One day after surgery, the patient's health was stable and he continued to be treated at the Department of Neurosurgery.

Doctor Minh recommends that summer is the harvest season for many types of fruit trees such as lychee, longan, mango, star fruit, jackfruit... people need to be careful when picking fruit to avoid unfortunate accidents.
