Mr. Hoang Nam Tien, Vice Chairman of the Board of FPT University, suddenly passed away on the afternoon of July 31 due to a stroke. This news surprised many people, especially young people who had attended his talks.
He once shared that “an intellectual is a reader”, and affirmed the importance of books in bringing knowledge and contributing to his success. In the era of artificial intelligence, he believes that we can take advantage of this technology to help reading become faster and more effective.
“AI does not replace humans. It is those who know how to use AI who will replace the rest,” Mr. Tien shared at the workshop “AI and Business Administration” organized by FPT University in May 2024.
During an interview with Tri Thuc - Znews, Mr. Tien commented that in reading books, each tool such as ChatGPT, Copilot, Gemini and Deepseek are capable of supporting the reading process in many different ways.
To read quickly, readers first need to practice maximum concentration. Mr. Tien also shared the speed reading method, which helps increase reading speed 6-9 times faster than normal people while still ensuring the ability to remember.
First, he would soften the book to make it easier to turn the pages. When reading, he would hold the book with one hand and draw an S shape on the page with the other hand. This helped his eyes follow the movement of his hand, increasing his reading speed.
He also shares tips on focusing on verbs to better grasp the main content. And to achieve the expected results, readers need to practice seriously and have the right technique.
In basic terms, AI can summarize key content, helping readers quickly grasp important points. To dig deeper into key details, ask additional questions, thereby focusing on the most noteworthy content.
Not only that, AI can help find books with similar topics, and compare them to understand the author's point of view. Readers can also choose books that suit their current mood and self-development needs. Thanks to that, Mr. Tien was able to grasp the content of the book in just 15-30 minutes.
However, when using AI to find and compare books, he always has his own principles to ensure accuracy. If the summary shows that the book is valuable, he will buy a paper copy to directly flip through and read carefully to feel more deeply.
AI will never replace the actual reading experience and the process of contemplating the content. It is even capable of making up information from books. Users will need to find original documents to compare, or train chatbots to verify and authenticate.
Mr. Tien also noted the fact that AI is capable of writing books very quickly, but the quality and citations are loose and lack depth. This leads to a situation where there are too many books to read, but users do not know which books are suitable.
Therefore, readers need to equip themselves with the skill of carefully selecting books. Ordinary readers, especially young people, have little experience in identifying a valuable book among the many published books. Mr. Tien advises that you should consult reputable people, or rely on reliable organizations and publishers.
According to Mr. Tien, continuous learning and working during this period is the key to helping each person adapt to the rapid changes in technology. Each book can be read by AI in just a few minutes, but "people reading books themselves will help expand their knowledge and expand their critical thinking and creativity", he said on the occasion of participating in the Vietnam Book and Reading Culture Day 2025, March 2025 in Quang Tri province.
