(Baothanhhoa.vn) - In Duc Thang village, Thuong Ninh commune (Nhu Xuan district), when you ask about the Party branch secretary and village head Le Van Hiep (40 years old), of the Tho ethnic group, everyone praises him for not only being energetic and enthusiastic in the village's activities, but also being a prime example in developing his family's economy.

Recognizing the potential of his hometown for developing farm-based businesses , particularly rabbit breeding, in 2023, he collaborated with several rabbit-farming households in Trieu Son district to invest in building a New Zealand rabbit breeding farm. He boldly borrowed capital from the District Branch of the Social Policy Bank, along with accumulated savings and loans from family, friends, and relatives, to build a 300m² rabbit farm with 460 cages; and purchased 460 breeding rabbits. To gain knowledge, he diligently visited successful rabbit breeding models both within and outside the district, consulted books and newspapers, and participated in training courses on advanced scientific and technical knowledge in farming and animal husbandry organized by the district and commune.

Mr. Le Van Hiep shared: Rabbits are livestock with weak immune systems, so they easily get sick when the weather changes. Therefore, during the care process, breeders must always keep the cage floor dry, well-ventilated, and hygienic, adjusting the temperature to be cool in summer and warm in winter. In addition, regular disinfection spraying and frequent vaccination are necessary to prevent diseases. Food and water must also be clean to ensure the rabbits grow quickly and are less prone to disease. Rabbits over one year old begin to reproduce, with a gestation period of around 30 days, and each mother rabbit can give birth to 6-8 offspring. After just over a month, the breeding rabbits can be sold. Currently, the family farm always has nearly 500 breeding rabbits, and on average, nearly 1,000 breeding rabbits are sold each month, at a price of 100,000 VND per pair at the farm. After deducting expenses, his family earns a profit of 120 to 150 million VND per year.
