On the morning of August 14, the Hanoi Party Committee, People's Council, People's Committee, and Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee held a meeting with representatives of veteran revolutionaries, exemplary contributors, and former leaders of the city from all periods to celebrate the 80th anniversary of the August Revolution (August 19, 1945 - August 19, 2025) and the National Day of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam (September 2, 1945 - September 2, 2025).

Attending the meeting were comrades: Bui Thi Minh Hoai, Politburo member, Secretary of the City Party Committee, Head of the National Assembly Delegation of Hanoi; Pham The Duyet, former Politburo Standing Member, former Chairman of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Fatherland Front, former Secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee; Pham Quang Nghi, former Politburo member, former Secretary of the City Party Committee, former Head of the National Assembly Delegation of Hanoi; Nguyen Ngoc Tuan, Deputy Secretary of the City Party Committee, Chairman of the City People's Council, Deputy Head of the National Assembly Delegation of Hanoi; Member of the Standing Committee of the City Party Committee, Chairman of the Vietnam Fatherland Front Committee of Hanoi Nguyen Lan Huong...

In particular, the meeting was attended by more than 400 delegates, veteran revolutionary cadres, Vietnamese Heroic Mothers, Viet Minh soldiers of Hoang Dieu citadel, exemplary meritorious people; and former city leaders of all periods.

We must love more, be more proud and live more responsibly with Hanoi.

At the beginning of the meeting, the delegates enjoyed a special art program and a television political report recreating the heroic spirit of the August uprising in the capital Hanoi, where the people's uprising spirit combined with the wise and talented leadership of the Party and great Uncle Ho created a glorious victory, opening a new era, the era of national independence and socialism for the nation.

Speaking at the meeting, Mr. Nguyen Huu Tai, a pre-uprising cadre, former Deputy Director of the Military Training Department (General Staff of the Vietnam People's Army) said that in early 1945, the terrible and haunting impression that remained in his mind was the tragedy of famine that took place throughout the country, taking the lives of 2 million people. Everywhere, there were corpses of people who died of starvation, only skin and bones left. Carts carrying the dead passed by the door every day.

In that context, the August Revolution opened a new page in the history of the nation. After the day of the “Japanese coup against the French”, revolutionary movements under the Viet Minh flag rose up everywhere, from urban to rural areas. The Viet Minh’s slogan at that time was “destroy the Japanese rice warehouses, save the people from starvation” and was enthusiastically responded to...

On September 2, 1945, a large number of people from all over raised the "red flag with yellow star" and flocked to the Independence Day.

Mr. Nguyen Huu Tai was fortunate to be present at that important ceremony. He shared: “I will never forget the jubilant, bustling atmosphere at Ba Dinh Square that day. Amidst the colorful flags and flowers, the whole crowd was silent, listening to every word, every sentence of beloved Uncle Ho when he read the “Declaration of Independence”...”.

After the success of the August Revolution, Mr. Tai continued to participate in the resistance war against the French. During the Dien Bien Phu battle, he was Deputy Political Commissar of Regiment 209 (Division 312). During the resistance war against the US, he continued to fight in the Southern battlefield, as Deputy Political Commissar of the Southern Artillery Command, then Deputy Political Commissar of the Southern Liberation Base Command...

“As a pre-revolt cadre, I am 96 years old this year. Throughout my life in the military, I have always kept in mind the need to fight for independence for the Fatherland and freedom for the people. I am proud to have contributed a small part of my strength to the miraculous revolution of the nation, in the cause of national liberation, and I will continue to promote the revolutionary tradition, uphold the qualities of Uncle Ho's soldiers, and contribute to building the capital and the country in the new era of development,” said Mr. Nguyen Huu Tai.

Representing former city officials of all periods, Prof. Dr. Phung Huu Phu, former member of the Party Central Committee, former Standing Deputy Secretary of the City Party Committee, former Chairman of the Hanoi People's Council, stated that on the 80-year journey under the glorious flag of the Party, the Hanoi Party Committee, with its mettle, intelligence, and strength of great solidarity in struggle, labor, and creativity, has written glorious pages of history, with very proud historical milestones. Among them, the uprising to seize power in Hanoi on August 19, 1945, the decisive blow that paralyzed and disintegrated the ruling system of Japanese fascists and their puppet government, paved the way for provinces and cities across the country to rise up in a general uprising leading to the great victory of the August Revolution, will forever shine.

According to Comrade Phung Huu Phu, in every step of development, in every success, in every project, in every inch of land of the Capital over the past 80 years, the efforts of millions of Hanoians have been imbued. Those great and silent efforts need to be respected, recognized and rewarded. At the same time, that reminds us to love Hanoi more, to be more proud, and to live more responsibly.

Affirming that he will continue to accompany and contribute to the construction and development of the capital and the country, comrade Phung Huu Phu emphasized: “Our capital and the whole country are preparing to enter a new era of national development. We deeply believe that with the new position, new strength, with the glorious tradition and valuable experience that have been forged over the past 80 years, beloved Hanoi will firmly take the lead in the construction of a strong, prosperous and happy Vietnam; building a cultured, civilized, modern and happy capital Hanoi, on par with advanced capitals in the world”.

Determined to build a prosperous and happy capital and country

Speaking at the meeting, Secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee Bui Thi Minh Hoai affirmed that the victory of the August Revolution in 1945 was one of the most brilliant golden pages of history, a great turning point in the history of the Vietnamese nation; opening a new era - the era of national independence associated with socialism; bringing our people from slavery to masters of the country, masters of their own destiny. On September 2, 1945, at the historic Ba Dinh Square, President Ho Chi Minh, on behalf of the provisional revolutionary government, solemnly read the "Declaration of Independence", declaring to the world the birth of the Democratic Republic of Vietnam - the first worker-peasant state in Southeast Asia - now the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.

“The August Revolution and National Day September 2 are events of epochal significance and profound international significance; a source of great encouragement and motivation for colonial nations and oppressed and exploited people around the world to rise up and fight for national independence, democracy and social progress; a vivid demonstration of the strength of great national unity, the tradition of ardent patriotism, the mettle, intelligence and indomitable will of our people inherited and promoted to new heights in the struggle organized and led by our Party and President Ho Chi Minh.

That is the victory of the correct revolutionary line, wise leadership, strategic vision, acumen to create and seize opportunities that only happen once in a thousand years, combining national strength with the strength of the times, and Hanoi is honored and proud to be the place where the General Uprising to seize power started and created the premise for the success of the nationwide general uprising to seize power,” emphasized comrade Bui Thi Minh Hoai.

Reviewing the great achievements of the Capital and the country since the above historical milestone until today, when the whole country is looking forward to celebrating the 80th anniversary of the successful August Revolution and the National Day of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam, Secretary of the Hanoi Party Committee Bui Thi Minh Hoai expressed her boundless gratitude for the great contributions of beloved President Ho Chi Minh; respectfully grateful for the great contributions of millions of heroes and martyrs who fought and sacrificed for the independence and freedom of the nation; The senior leaders of the Party and the nation, the veteran revolutionaries, the Vietnamese Heroic Mothers, the Heroes of the Armed Forces, the wounded and sick soldiers, the families of martyrs, the families with meritorious services to the country, the war veterans, former youth volunteers, former People's Public Security officers, together with our compatriots and comrades in all parts of the country, our compatriots abroad, who have devoted their blood, bones and efforts to the cause of national liberation struggle for independence, freedom and national reunification.

Comrade Bui Thi Minh Hoai said that, promoting the revolutionary tradition, thoroughly grasping the guiding ideology of the Party Central Committee and General Secretary To Lam on "New Era - Era of national rise", the Party Committee, government and people of Hanoi are determined to build and develop the capital worthy of being the national political and administrative nerve center, the heart of the whole country; a major center of economy, culture, education and training, science and technology and international integration... In the immediate future, striving to complete and exceed the targets and objectives set out in the Resolution of the 17th City Party Congress, contributing with the whole country to successfully implement the Resolution of the 13th Party Congress. Preparing all conditions well to successfully organize the 18th City Party Congress towards the 14th National Congress of the Party.
