Many expectations for the new generation of black tiger shrimp

Increased output (3.5% increase in 8 months of 2025), high survival rate, fast growth rate, few diseases and especially easy to raise to large size, bringing high economic efficiency to farmers... Those are the initial results, marking the impressive return of black tiger shrimp after more than 10 years of being "overwhelmed" by whiteleg shrimp.

Overcoming rain and sun, winning EHP

After the trial of raising the new generation of black tiger shrimp, Mr. Vo Van Phuc, General Director of Vietnam Clean Seafood Joint Stock Company (Vinacleanfood), commented: "The new black tiger shrimp line of CP ( Vietnam CP Livestock Joint Stock Company), although raised at a density of 30 shrimp/m2 in earthen ponds, has a very high survival rate and the shrimp grow very quickly. If this black tiger shrimp has good resistance to EHP (microsporidia), shrimp farmers will have a great opportunity to get rich." According to long-time shrimp farmers, these new generation of black tiger shrimp lines are almost immune to EHP.

Mr. Pham Van Hau in Vinh Chau ward, Can Tho city, affirmed: "I raise new generation Hawaii + Linh Chi black tiger shrimp of Chau Phi Seafood Joint Stock Company at the size of 20-25 shrimp/kg, which is normal and I almost do not see the appearance of EHP".

Not only can they be raised at high density, grow quickly and have a high survival rate, the new generation of black tiger shrimp can also be raised to large sizes. Recently, CP Vietnam Livestock Joint Stock Company officially confirmed the record of CP-Super Monodon black tiger shrimp supplied by the Company, which was raised by Mr. Huynh Khanh Luong in Tran De commune, Can Tho city, reaching 12 shrimp/kg in 144 days. With this size, Mr. Luong was offered a price of up to 380,000 VND/kg by traders specializing in buying fresh live shrimp (oxygenated shrimp). In the first crop, after 120 days of raising Monodon black tiger shrimp, the shrimp also reached a size of 24-26 shrimp/kg.

Mr. Luong shared: “Although raised in ponds that were continuously infected with EHP, white feces and intestinal diseases many previous seasons, during the entire farming cycle, the Monodon shrimp breed was almost immune to the above diseases. Not only that, the shrimp also achieved a high survival rate and a faster growth rate than previous tiger shrimp strains.”

In the shrimp-rice farming area of the Ca Mau Peninsula, black tiger shrimp farmers also highly appreciate the effectiveness of new-generation black tiger shrimp strains. Mr. Nguyen Van Muc in Tay Yen commune, An Giang province, shared: “I raise black tiger shrimp according to the shrimp-rice model. In recent years, thanks to the use of new domesticated shrimp breeds, the productivity and size of farmed shrimp have increased significantly. Notably, in the 2025 farming season, the stocking density remains the same but the profit has reached 150 million VND/ha, nearly double that of raising old shrimp breeds.

Mr. Ma Van Hong, Director of Hoa De Agricultural and Fishery Cooperative in Hoa Tu Commune, Can Tho City, said that the new generation of black tiger shrimp has a very high resistance to environmental fluctuations and diseases, so it is only necessary to raise them at a density of about 3 shrimp/ m2 , with supplementary feed and combined with conditions for selective harvesting and restocking, then when the farming season is favorable, the yield will also reach 1-2 tons/ha.

More opportunities for shrimp farmers

In recent years, when the whiteleg shrimp farming model has become increasingly difficult, the area for black tiger shrimp farming has gradually increased again, thanks to the presence of new generation domesticated black tiger shrimp lines. The outstanding features of these black tiger shrimp lines are their fast growth rate, low herd division rate and good resistance to adverse environmental conditions. This transformation has brought the black tiger shrimp output in the first 8 months of 2025 to more than 184,100 tons, an increase of 3.5% over the same period. The increase in black tiger shrimp output partly shows that the black tiger shrimp farming model is gradually meeting the expectations of shrimp farmers.

According to Mr. Ho Quoc Luc, Chairman of the Board of Directors of Sao Ta Food Joint Stock Company, although the output of black tiger shrimp only accounts for about 1/3 of the output of brackish water shrimp, it still creates a certain advantage for the Vietnamese shrimp industry, helping businesses meet the requirements of importers in diversifying supply sources.

As a scientist from the University of Tasmania (Australia), Dr. Hoang Tung believes that, with the specific conditions in farming areas, localities should develop in parallel intensive and super-intensive farming of whiteleg shrimp with semi-intensive, extensive or improved extensive farming of black tiger shrimp; in which the ecological/organic black tiger shrimp farming model is very suitable.

Dr. Tran Dinh Luan, Director of the Department of Fisheries and Fisheries Control, emphasized: "To develop well and effectively, the black tiger shrimp farming industry according to international standards associated with building the Vietnamese shrimp brand, it is absolutely necessary to reorganize production and implement the chain linkage well. The next issue is the transfer of science and technology, which needs to change the content and training methods so that in the shortest time we can build a national shrimp brand."

Currently, although the world's consumption trend has shifted to using more whiteleg shrimp due to the advantage of low price, because there are not many countries raising blackleg shrimp, the supply is also limited. The increasing demand for blackleg shrimp from the domestic market as well as export markets such as China and some other large markets will be a great advantage for the return of the new generation of blackleg shrimp. This also means that the opportunity to improve the efficiency of blackleg shrimp farming for residents of the Mekong Delta in particular and the whole country in general will be greater and greater.
