This was Belgium's first defeat in 15 matches under coach Domenico Tedesco. BBC Sport pointed out that this was the first time Belgium had missed four big chances in a EURO match since 1980.

“ We knew that one day we would lose and unfortunately it came today,” the 38-year-old said after the match.

Coach Tedesco really cannot explain why his students could not successfully take advantage of the 16 opportunities they created.

“ Belgium created a lot of good chances. We knew Slovakia would press. But we handled it well and made some good passes. The only thing that wasn’t perfect was that we missed some big chances to score,” he added.

During the match, VAR twice denied Lukaku an equalizer for Belgium, the first due to an offside, then Openda's handball. Coach Tedesco did not go into the referee's issue, because he wanted to be a "loser who does not blame" .

Having lost their opening match of EURO 2024, Belgium will have to focus on the remaining two matches in Group D, against Romania (2am, June 23) and Ukraine (11pm, June 26).
