In 1972, when the resistance war against the US entered its fiercest stage, the Party and the State decided to build Thang Long Bridge - a bridge of great stature across the Red River. To be in charge of allocating capital for the construction of the key project Thang Long Bridge, on April 3, 1974, the Minister of Finance issued Decision No. 103/TC-QD/TCCB to establish the Thang Long Bridge Management Department (the predecessor of today's BIDV Thang Long).
Over five decades of construction and development, BIDV Thang Long has gone through different names associated with the tasks of each period; Those are Thang Long Bridge Management Department (1974 - 1980), Thang Long Bridge Investment and Construction Bank Branch (1981 - 1990), Vietnam Construction and Investment Bank - Thang Long Branch (1991 - 2012) and Vietnam Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Investment and Development - Thang Long Branch since May 1, 2012.
Imprints on key projects
Right from the first day of establishment, with the main function of allocating, inspecting and paying for basic construction capital for the key project of Thang Long Bridge, BIDV Thang Long has excellently completed the assigned tasks. During the 11 years, from the day Thang Long Bridge project started (1974) to the inauguration day (1985), the management and allocation of capital for the project were carried out in accordance with regulations, ensuring both timely and rapid allocation of capital for construction and close supervision and urging of capital use, the total amount of capital allocated for the project reached nearly 4 billion VND (equivalent to 30 million USD at the current price).
In the following period, with experience in managing and allocating capital for basic construction investment, the branch was trusted by the Party, the State and BIDV, assigned the task of allocating capital to serve many key national projects, which have special significance for economic development, production, transportation, education and training... typically: Project K84 of the State Bank of Vietnam (now the National Money Printing Factory); Project 481 Institute of the National Atomic Institute; Phu Luong Bridge; University of Finance; Hanoi railway hub; Hanoi - Hai Phong railway; North - South Thang Long road; Viet Tri bridge; Ba Che - Yen Bai bridge; Phong Chau bridge...

Continuing the glorious tradition in new conditions
From January 1, 1995, along with the entire BIDV system, Thang Long branch entered into business operations as a commercial bank with diverse business areas such as: capital mobilization, payment, credit, guarantee, receiving investment trust capital, insurance... The qualitative change in banking business activities has posed many difficulties and challenges for the branch, requiring real innovation to rise up. The branch advocates comprehensive restructuring of business activities, aiming at the goal of safety - efficiency - sustainability. In particular, the top priority is: increasing scale associated with improving the quality of operations; thoroughly overcoming existing difficulties, especially handling bad debts, off-balance sheet debts; promoting the development of retail products and services, digital banking services, high-end customer services; developing SME, FDI, import-export customer segments... in line with the orientation of a modern commercial bank.
In terms of organization, from a disbursement department with only 09 staff, BIDV Thang Long has now become a large commercial bank branch with a strong and prestigious brand with 183 staff, 11 functional departments and 06 transaction offices operating in Hanoi. The Branch Party Committee has been recognized as a clean and strong Party Committee for many consecutive years. The Trade Union and Youth Union organizations operate actively and effectively, always performing well the assigned functions and tasks, and are the main driving force of the branch in professional work and other social activities...
BIDV Thang Long Group
With a high spirit of determination, the branch's staff have united, overcome difficulties, and strived to excellently complete assigned tasks. BIDV Thang Long has grown strongly with impressive indicators: Total assets by the end of 2023 reached VND 29,000 billion, an increase of 2,636 times compared to 1995; Capital mobilization reached VND 28,512 billion, an increase of 2,728 times compared to 1995; Outstanding credit balance reached VND 14,096 billion, an increase of 169 times compared to 1995; Labor productivity reached VND 4.04 billion/staff (in 1995 it was VND 81 million/staff).
The branch has strongly transformed its business structure towards diversification, improving service quality, focusing on customers, striving to build a safe and sustainable operating structure, creating a premise for future development stages. In particular, retail banking activities have been focused on promoting and reaping many positive results, the scale of retail activities has grown by an average of 36%/year in the period 1995-2023, the proportion of the total scale of branch activities increased from 4% in 1995 to 49% in 2023.
Following the flow of the economy, promoting its inherent tradition, BIDV Thang Long continues to accompany customers through expanding construction funding for many key projects with a total capital of up to thousands of billions of VND, typically: Bai Chay Bridge (Quang Ninh), Thu Thiem Bridge (Ho Chi Minh City), Ben Thuy II Bridge (Nghe An), Trai Hut Bridge (Yen Bai), Nam Dinh Vu Port (Hai Phong), North-South Expressway section Phan Thiet - Dau Giay, My Thuan 2 Bridge (Can Tho), Vinh Tuy Bridge (Hanoi), Quang Trach - Doc Soi 500KV Power Line Project... and many other commercial and social housing construction projects. BIDV Thang Long's funding has contributed to creating projects that stand the test of time, bringing pride and recognition not only to the branch but also to the entire BIDV system.
In addition, the branch also actively participates in local activities, contributing to the effective implementation of the socio-economic development goals of the capital, typically cooperating with the Hanoi Employment Service Center in opening accounts to pay unemployment benefits to workers, thereby helping to minimize errors, speed up payment progress to workers, contributing to promoting the implementation of the Project on developing non-cash payments according to Decision No. 1813/QD-TTg of the Prime Minister. To date, the branch has opened accounts to pay unemployment benefits to nearly 300,000 workers with an amount of over 6,000 billion VND.

From its initial mission of providing capital for the construction of key projects, BIDV Thang Long has now become a multi-functional commercial bank branch, joining the flow of the BIDV system, with a strong mark in all fields.
