The old French villa (at 49 Tran Hung Dao Street - 46 Hang Bai Street) has a construction area of 174m2, located in a campus of 993m2.
This is one of the few old French villas in Hanoi that still maintains a large garden space. The villa was abandoned for a long time, many items are almost completely damaged.
Implementing the city's urban beautification policy and the cooperation agreement between the Hanoi People's Committee and the Ile-de-France region, Hoan Kiem district has carried out restoration work with technical support from the Ile-de-France region (France).
The restoration was difficult because this was a private villa, so there were no records other than a photo of the homeowner's family standing in front of the villa.
Before carrying out conservation and repair work, experts carried out activities to assess the current status and explore material layers to clarify original elements for restoration.
In order for the public to understand the construction method and construction materials of the villa, experts decided to strip off the mortar and leave some walls bare, but the entire staircase wall inside was left bare so that people could observe the type of bricks taken from Hanoi citadel.
In addition, some parts of the roof and ceiling were also exposed by experts to reveal the original structures.
In particular, to help the public understand more about the restoration of the villa, the People's Committee of Hoan Kiem District coordinated with the International Cooperation Agency of Ile-de-France (France) to organize an exhibition introducing the restoration process of the villa. In addition to photos and explanations, the public can also see the original materials of the project.
In addition to the bricks from Hanoi citadel, there are also Vietnamese-style decorative patterns made of baked ceramic.
Introductions to ceiling materials, door latches, floor tiles, etc. are all thoroughly presented, with illustrated exhibits.
The organizers also introduced a photo series by photographer Francois Carlet Soulages about the entire transformation process of the villa from when it was an abandoned building, the explorations and research of scientists ... to each step in the restoration process.
