Crowds gathered in front of the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin, carrying Israeli flags or pictures of hostages taken by Hamas. Organizers estimated 20,000 people participated, while German police said the actual number of protesters was about half that figure.
"Every attack on Jews, or Jewish organizations, is a slap in the face to Germany. Every attack fills me with shame and outrage," German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier told the crowd.
Earlier, German Chancellor Olaff Scholz attended the inauguration of a new synagogue in the eastern city of Dessau, expressing outrage at the rise of antisemitism since the Israeli-Hamas conflict began. Last week, several buildings in Berlin where Jewish people live were vandalized with graffiti, and a synagogue in Berlin was also attacked with petrol bombs.
