Crowds gathered in front of Berlin's Brandenburg Gate, carrying Israeli flags or pictures of hostages taken by Hamas. Organizers estimated that 20,000 people took part, but German police said the actual number of protesters was about half that.
"Every attack on Jews or Jewish organisations is a slap in the face for Germany. Every attack makes me ashamed and angry," German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier told the crowd.
Earlier, German Chancellor Olaff Scholz attended the inauguration of a new synagogue in the eastern city of Dessau, expressing outrage at the rise of anti-Semitism since the Israel-Hamas conflict broke out. Last week, several buildings in Berlin where Jews live were graffitied, and a synagogue in Berlin was also petrol bombed.
