Ho Chi Minh's timeless symbol in the heart of Mexico

On May 27th, the Vietnamese Embassy in Mexico, in coordination with the Mexico City government, held a ceremony to inaugurate the renovated and restored statue of President Ho Chi Minh at the Park of Freedom for the Peoples, located within the Historic Centre of Mexico City.

According to the VNA correspondent in Mexico, the ceremony was attended by representatives from the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Mexico City government, political organizations such as the ruling National Reconstruction Movement (Morena) party, the Mexican Labor Party (PT), the Mexican Communist Party, the Mexico-Vietnam Friendship Parliamentary Group, the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Mexican Parliament, the Mexico-Vietnam Friendship and Cooperation Institute, the Socialist Republic of Vietnam Primary School, and the construction company.

In the solemn and moving setting of Mexico City, where lush green trees embrace the grounds of the Park of Freedom for the Peoples, the image of President Ho Chi Minh appears both approachable and noble, a living symbol of the aspiration for peace, independence, and solidarity among the peoples of the world .

In his opening remarks at the ceremony, Pablo Yanez, Minister of Welfare of the Mexico City government, emphasized that the restoration and reconstruction of the Ho Chi Minh monument is not only an activity to preserve a work of art with historical value, but also reflects the profound respect of the Mexican people for an outstanding leader who dedicated his entire life to the freedom, independence, and happiness of the people.

The Minister of Welfare affirmed: “For many generations of Mexicans, President Ho Chi Minh was not only the leader of the heroic Vietnamese people, but also a global symbol of courage, self-reliance, and the aspiration for justice. The presence of his statue in the park named Freedom for the Peoples is entirely natural, because his life and ideology embody freedom, human dignity, and international solidarity.”

Next, Fernando González Saiffe, Director General of the Asia-Pacific Department of the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs (SRE), assessed the Mexico-Vietnam relationship as one of the models of deep and sincere cooperation between Latin America and Southeast Asia.

Fernando González Saiffe emphasized: “In a world facing much instability and division, President Ho Chi Minh’s ideas on peace, dialogue, and equality among nations remain profoundly relevant. The Mexican people have always held a special admiration for the tenacious struggle of the Vietnamese people under the leadership of President Ho Chi Minh. This statue will continue to be a place for younger generations of Mexicans to learn about Vietnamese history, about a nation that loves peace but never submits to oppression.”

Speaking at the ceremony, Vietnamese Ambassador to Mexico Nguyen Van Hai affirmed that the restoration and reconstruction of the Ho Chi Minh monument is a vivid testament to the close ties and special affection that the Mexican Government, the Mexico City administration, and the Mexican people have for the country and people of Vietnam.

Ambassador Nguyen Van Hai emphasized: “Over more than half a century, the traditional friendship and multifaceted cooperation between Vietnam and Mexico have been continuously strengthened and nurtured based on political trust, mutual respect, and shared values ​​of independence, peace, freedom, development, and justice. Today's event is a powerful testament to that enduring friendship.”

According to the Ambassador, the statue is not only a work of art, but also a bridge connecting two nations and two cultures that seem geographically distant but are incredibly close and bound together by spirit and heart.

Ambassador Nguyen Van Hai expressed: “Present in the space of the Park of Freedom for Nations, the Ho Chi Minh monument reminds us and future generations of a pure international relationship built and nurtured on trust, sincerity, and noble solidarity. While strolling through this park, anyone can stop by the Ho Chi Minh monument to feel the peace, to reflect on the eternal values ​​of freedom and fraternity.”

The ambassador emphasized that in the current complex international context, President Ho Chi Minh's immortal saying, "Nothing is more precious than independence and freedom," along with his ideas on self-determination and equality among nations, further demonstrates its enduring significance and powerful influence.

On this occasion, Ambassador Nguyen Van Hai expressed his deep gratitude to the Mexico City government, relevant agencies, and close Mexican friends for their affection, valuable support, and for creating favorable conditions for the renovation of the building to be completed beautifully and elegantly in time for the 136th anniversary of President Ho Chi Minh's birthday.

The Ambassador also expressed his gratitude to sculptor Pedro Ramírez Ponzanelli, who, with his talent and sincere affection for Vietnam, successfully depicted the image of the beloved leader of the Vietnamese nation in a vivid and emotional way, and who made every effort to complete the work in time for May 19th to unveil it to the public at this solemn event.

Speaking to a VNA reporter at the event, Nguyen Ngoc Gia Bao, a Vietnamese student studying in Mexico, emotionally shared that although she had only been in Mexico for a little over a month, she clearly felt the special affection that the Mexican people had for President Ho Chi Minh and Vietnam.

Gia Bảo shared: “Attending today's ceremony is a great source of pride for me. In a country half a world away from my homeland, seeing the statue of President Ho Chi Minh standing proudly and being cherished by my Mexican friends, I feel empowered and inspired. The statue will always be a sacred spiritual anchor for the Vietnamese community and Vietnamese students in Mexico.”

Amidst solemn music and vibrant bouquets of flowers placed at the foot of the monument, the image of President Ho Chi Minh in the heart of Mexico City continues to be a beautiful symbol of Vietnam-Mexico friendship, of the aspiration for peace, freedom, and solidarity among peoples who cherish justice around the world.
