'Fight' for national pride

Held at two famous golf courses, Royal St George's and Royal Cinque Ports - where many legends have left their footprints, The Amateur Championship 2025 brings together 288 athletes from 45 countries.

Notably, this is the first time Vietnam has participated in this prestigious arena, and the name carrying great expectations is Vietnam's number 1 golfer Nguyen Anh Minh.

According to the Asia- Pacific Golf Confederation (APGC), along with Zhou Zixin (China) and Rintaro Nakano (Japan), Anh Minh made a great contribution to helping the APGC team defeat the European team at the Bonallack Trophy 2025 - a prestigious Ryder Cup-style competition event in the UAE in January.

Now, reunited in England, this Asian trio is not only fighting for personal honor, but also for the flag and pride of the entire continent.

Golfer with highest WAGR ranking

The winner of The Amateur Championship 2025 will not only take home the prestigious trophy, but also earn a place at the 153rd The Open at Royal Portrush next month, the 2026 US Open and, traditionally, an invitation to The Masters.

The first challenge for golfers is a two-day stroke play event, with a total of 36 holes split evenly across Royal St George's and Royal Cinque Ports. The top 64 players will then compete in a knockout round to determine the champion. In the event of multiple players finishing in the same 64th place, the organizers will hold a play-off round to determine the next round.

The Asia- Pacific region has 17 golfers participating, of which Nguyen Anh Minh is the highest ranked (55th WAGR). Followed by Zhou Zixin (109) and Rintaro Nakano (176).

At last year's Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship in Japan, Zhou and Nakano finished second and third respectively, while Anh Minh tied for 19th place. However, experts say Anh Minh has matured significantly and is at his peak form.

  • Asian Expectations

Besides the three golfers who won the Bonallack Trophy mentioned above, some other notable faces from Asia are also Brayden Lee (Singapore, ranked 262), Bhumkit Pitchayasaowapak (Thailand, ranked 280) and Kayun Mudadana (Australia, ranked 299).

Brayden recently won The Royal Junior Championship in Japan, while Bhumkit is the Singapore Junior Masters champion.

Mudadana has impressed with top 10 finishes at three major tournaments in England in the past month, including third at the Scottish Amateur Open and 11th at the St Andrews Links Trophy – showing he is a serious contender.

The Amateur Championship was first held in 1885 at Hoylake, with just 44 golfers competing. Over the course of nearly 140 years, the tournament has seen many big names crowned, including Bobby Jones, José María Olazábal and Sergio Garcia. Royal St George's – where most of this year's action will take place – is one of the oldest golf courses in England, having hosted the tournament 15 times, most recently in 2017. Meanwhile, Royal Cinque Ports has also hosted the tournament three times, most recently in 2013.
