According to the Ministry of Public Security's electronic information portal, on the occasion of the Day for African Children (June 16), the United Nations Gender Police Office in South Sudan coordinated with the Mission Support Center, the UNMISS Women Police Network, the Juba Metropolitan Police Office and the Working Group of the Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam at UNMISS to visit students.
At the Hope Secondary School and Unity Primary School in IDP Camp 01, Juba, UNMISS Personal Police Officers and gender experts held a talk to raise awareness on the importance of education for representatives of 348 students of Hope Secondary School and 1,363 students of Unity Primary School. In addition, the police officers also disseminated gender knowledge and presented gifts to female students.
On this occasion, to share the difficulties in facilities of teachers and students of the two schools, from the main support resources of the Women's Union of the Ministry of Public Security of Vietnam, the Working Group of the Ministry of Public Security at UNMISS presented to the students of the two schools nearly 2,000 notebooks, pencils, rulers, pencil sharpeners, ballpoint pens and sent to the teachers of the two schools registration books, chalk, and marking pens.
In addition, the Mission Police Network also brought laughter and joy to children in the IDP camp with toys such as hula hoops, skipping ropes, footballs, pens and coloring sheets.
This is the third charity activity of the Vietnam Women's Union of the Ministry of Public Security, implemented by the Working Group on behalf of the organization, contributing to bringing faith and hope to African children who have suffered many disadvantages from civil wars and have to live in very difficult conditions in refugee camps.
On June 16, 1976, in Soweto, South Africa, tens of thousands of African students participated in a march to protest the poor quality of education for Africans and demand the right to study in their mother tongue.
During the two weeks of protests, more than 100 students were killed and more than 1,000 were injured. The Organization of African Unity (OAU) subsequently designated June 16 as the Day of African Children (DAC) to raise awareness of the need to continue improving the quality of education for African children.
