Summer is the time when people flock to the beach to enjoy cool waters and participate in many exciting outdoor activities. However, there is one summer beauty routine that is often overlooked: lip care.
In fact, people often apply sunscreen to their face and body, while few pay attention to applying it to their lips. According to HealthShots, similar to other areas of the skin, the lips cannot protect themselves from the harmful UV rays of the sun. Therefore, the best way is to take preventive measures for the lips.

Cool compress
Applying a cool compress to your lips is an effective way to reduce inflammation, redness, and pain. A study published in the journal Diagnostic and Clinical Research found that applying a cool compress can help reduce pain and inflammation caused by various types of mouth injuries, including sunburned lips.
Drink plenty of water
Drinking plenty of water is important for maintaining healthy skin and lips. It can help reduce dryness and inflammation and promote healing. Additionally, drinking enough water during the hot summer months can provide extra moisture to your lips.
Avoid peeling lips
This can slow down the healing process and increase the risk of infection. If a person constantly picks and bites the skin on their lips, they are at a higher risk of developing cheilitis. Over time, this leads to a cycle of inflammation and damage that is difficult to break.
Use aloe vera
Aloe vera gel is a substance that gives a cool and pleasant feeling to the user. It helps soothe inflamed skin and promotes healing of various skin conditions (burns, wounds, infections).
Avoid lipstick or lip gloss
Some lipsticks and lip glosses may contain ingredients that dry or irritate your lips, so if you have sunburned lips, it's best to avoid using these products until your lips have fully healed.

Ways to help prevent sunburned lips
Use lip balm that contains SPF
Just like you care for your skin before going out in the sun, your lips need SPF care too. So, everyone should look for a lip balm with a minimum SPF of 15 and apply it liberally before going out. HealthShots recommends reapplying lip balm every 2 hours, after swimming or sweating.
A study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) also found that lip balms with SPF significantly increased protection against UV radiation compared to lip balms without SPF.
Wear a wide-brimmed hat
A wide-brimmed hat will help shade your face and protect your lips from the sun. According to research, wearing a hat with a brim of about 7 cm will significantly reduce the amount of UV radiation reaching your face and lips.
Limit sun exposure during peak hours
If possible, stay in the shade during the hottest part of the day, usually between 10am and 4pm. This is considered the best way to prevent any harmful effects of the sun.
Avoid tanning beds
Tanning beds also emit UV rays that can damage your skin. According to the AAD, using tanning beds significantly increases your risk of developing skin cancer, including melanoma.
