Supplementing nutrition from colostrum helps improve immunity for the elderly

At the scientific workshop "Improving knowledge of adult nutrition and immunity" held on June 17 in Can Tho, the Ministry of Health provided statistics on 20 underlying diseases that are at high risk in the elderly such as: cardiovascular disease, cerebrovascular disease, hypertension... The reason this group is susceptible to diseases is due to a weakened immune system - also known as immune aging.

The workshop with the participation of nearly 400 leading doctors and medical staff from Can Tho and neighboring provinces (Vinh Long, Soc Trang ...) brought the most updated and useful knowledge about health issues of the elderly, especially about immune aging and the application of immune nutrition in health care of the elderly after COVID-19, contributing to improving the quality of life.

Deputy Director of Can Tho Department of Health , Doctor CKII Pham Phu Truong Giang said: “In 2023 and the following years, the epidemic situation is forecasted to still have many impacts on health care for people. The elderly are a group of people at high risk of facing coronary heart disease, stroke, stroke... and some diseases caused by weak immune systems, affecting the quality of life. This workshop is a practical and meaningful activity, helping Can Tho medical staff improve their knowledge of health care and strengthen the immune system for the elderly."

Immunosenescence reduces the ability to fight disease, making it easier to get sick from bacterial and viral infections and reducing the ability to recover from illness. Immunosenescence can even lead to cancer, heart disease and other age-related health conditions and reduce the effectiveness of vaccines, such as the COVID-19 vaccine (according to research at the Leonard Davis School of Gerontology at the University of Southern California - USA).

“The immune system is an “armor” that helps prevent infections, stop and fight cancer and control inflammation. When this “armor” is worn out, it will reduce the ability to prevent disease, increase the rate of infection, pneumonia, tumors or autoimmune diseases” - Dr. Than Ha Ngoc The, Vice President of the Ho Chi Minh City Geriatric Association - Vice President of the Vietnam Palliative Care Medicine Association said.

The immune system and nutrition interact

Like other organs, the immune system also “accumulates” changes with age that result in a gradual decline in the ability to respond to infections, a process known as immunosenescence.

But it is possible to enhance, compensate for immunity, and reduce the effects of immune aging through nutritional supplementation of nutrients and antibodies.
