(QBĐT) - Currently, the movement of planting raw material forests in Bo Trach district is developing strongly, especially planting large timber forests and granting sustainable forest management certificates (FSC). The focus on planting large timber forests and planting forests according to FSC standards has changed the awareness of many households participating in forest planting in the district, thereby contributing to improving the quality and economic efficiency on the same unit area.
Bo Trach district currently has an area of forest and land planned for forest development of 164,849 hectares; of which, natural forest is 132,171 hectares, planted forest is 12,678 hectares, and unforested forest is nearly 6,800 hectares. The total forest coverage of the district by the end of 2023 reached 70%. In order to gradually improve the quality and value of planted forests, in the 2020-2025 term, the People's Committee of Bo Trach district has promptly developed a project "Developing agricultural linkages according to the value chain for the period 2021-2025" and strives to have at least 1,000 hectares of planted forests certified by FSC, and at the same time has a policy to support the granting of FSC forest certification according to state regulations.
Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (DARD) of Bo Trach district, Nguyen Cam Long, said: In the past, the department has proactively advised the district People's Committee to direct relevant sectors to coordinate with the Vietnam Nature Conservation Center and other units to pilot the issuance of FSC forest certification. Along with that, the district has also coordinated with BVN Quang Binh Joint Stock Company to assess and issue FSC certification for acacia forests in communes and towns in the area with an area of over 4,500 hectares.
Since the beginning of 2024, Bo Trach district has coordinated and completed the granting of FSC certification in Phuc Trach commune with an area of 401 hectares, including 101 participating households. By the end of October 2024, the total area of planted forests in the district that has been granted FSC certification has increased to 4,932 hectares, reaching and exceeding the project's plan target. Currently, Bo Trach district is coordinating with the Vietnam Nature Conservation Center to conduct a sustainable forest management assessment for natural forests in Thuong Trach commune with an area of 286 hectares. It is expected that by the end of 2024, the entire area of this natural forest will be granted FSC certification...
“According to the assessment from the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Bo Trach district: Since the whole district has promoted the implementation of large timber plantation and forest plantation according to FSC standards, the quality of planted forests in many areas has been improved through the management of origin, ensuring seed quality; improving technical measures in planting and caring for forests; the average productivity of planted forests has reached 80-100m3 /ha, much higher than previous years... |
Mr. Hoang Tien Dung in Phuc Khe village 2, Phuc Trach commune shared: “Previously, most of the forest planting in our village was done using traditional methods, without paying attention to the quality of seedlings, planting density, and care techniques, so the productivity was low, the price was unstable, and traders often forced down the price. Now, when participating in converting acacia forests according to FSC standards, my family's acacia forests have been strictly managed and cared for according to the correct technical process, so the productivity and quality of the wood have been improved. The age of FSC-standard forests is from 7-10 years, and the selling price on the market will be 10-15% higher than the price of traditional planted forests before.”
According to Nguyen Cam Long, Head of the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Bo Trach district, in recent years, thanks to the focus on afforestation according to FSC standards, the work of forest protection and development in the area has achieved many important results. Specifically, the forest area in the area has increased rapidly over the years, the forest cover is high and stable, the economic benefits from forests have been more clearly affirmed; thereby, solving jobs for thousands of workers, contributing to poverty reduction and economic growth of the district. However, the implementation of FSC certification of planted forests and natural forests in Bo Trach still faces a number of difficulties and obstacles: In terms of techniques, expertise, capital, policies as well as the issue of linking the purchase of planted forest wood after being granted FSC certification; procedures, documents, legality; high costs for inspection, assessment and maintenance of annual assessments, while many people with forests have difficult economic conditions and do not have enough funds to implement; The awareness and understanding of the community and people about sustainable forest management and FSC certification is still limited, and the effectiveness of FSC forests has not been truly seen...
