Minister Nguyen Chi Dung received former British Prime Minister, Chairman of the TBI Institute Tony Blair

(MPI) – On the afternoon of April 16, 2024, Minister of Planning and Investment Nguyen Chi Dung had a meeting with Mr. Tony Blair, former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Executive Chairman of the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change (TBI Institute).

Speaking at the reception, Minister Nguyen Chi Dung highly appreciated the coordination and support of Mr. Tony Blair and his colleagues at TBI with the Ministry of Planning and Investment in the past time and hoped that he and TBI would continue to support in specific areas such as research and consultation to establish regional and international financial centers in Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang; Attracting, promoting and facilitating high-quality investment in Vietnam as well as participating in activities at the National Innovation Center through the priority sectors and fields of this Center, especially in the fields of semiconductor industry, artificial intelligence;...

Minister Nguyen Chi Dung emphasized the current domestic and international situation and context and said that after identifying difficulties, challenges and opportunities, the most important thing is how to realize them, create value and overcome challenges. At the same time, he said that Vietnam is focusing on 3 breakthroughs, including perfecting institutions, building infrastructure, training human resources associated with science and technology, innovation, cultural values and Vietnamese people; promoting infrastructure development, especially strategic infrastructure; continuing to improve the investment environment, reforming administrative procedures, creating a competitive investment environment.

In the context of many changes in global FDI flows as present, Vietnam is implementing stronger innovative policies in attracting investment in this field. Vietnam hopes that Mr. Tony Blair and the TBI Institute will share in attracting new, high-quality FDI projects; new policies to encourage attracting investors, especially in the new context in the world and the emergence of the OECD's global minimum tax rule.

Regarding the construction of an international financial center in Ho Chi Minh City and Da Nang, Minister Nguyen Chi Dung thanked Mr. Tony Blair and the TBI Institute for their initial research support and hoped to continue receiving attention, support, experience sharing, research and advice so that Vietnam can build a financial center in accordance with international practices and the country's characteristics, operating effectively.

At the same time, research and share about new generation investment attraction drivers such as international financial centers; artificial intelligence; semiconductor industry, clean energy; green growth...; at the same time, research and cooperate in industries and fields of the National Innovation Center such as smart factories, smart cities, digital content, cyber security, semiconductor industry, environmental technology, hydrogen technology and medical technology.

Vietnam is also accelerating the implementation of the goal by 2030, training 50 thousand semiconductor industry engineers; becoming an important link in the global semiconductor industry value chain with a team of engineers and experts capable of meeting the requirements of developing the Vietnamese semiconductor industry. To realize the set goal, Vietnam wishes to cooperate with organizations, businesses, universities of countries and economies, including the UK in general and the TBI Institute in particular.

Speaking at the reception, Mr. Tony Blair expressed his joy at returning to Vietnam, sincerely thanked Minister Nguyen Chi Dung for his coordination, support and reception as well as the information shared. At the same time, he emphasized the rapid changes in digital transformation and science and technology taking place around the world. He also shared some more information and suggested some ideas on attracting investment, building an international financial center; developing the semiconductor industry; applying artificial intelligence... and believed that Vietnam would develop rapidly in the near future.

At the same time, he said that he and the Tony Blair Institute fully agreed with the Minister's sharing and orientation, committed to coordinating and supporting Vietnam in the areas mentioned by the Minister; affirmed to continue promoting cooperation with the Ministry of Planning and Investment, contributing to further strengthening the investment cooperation relationship between the two countries in the coming time./.
