“It is undeniable that a conflict or confrontation between China and the United States would be a disaster for the world,” China's defense minister warned.
Minister Li Shangfu said that China is committed to the path of peaceful development, but will protect its legitimate rights and interests. He also criticized the US and its allies for intensifying the arms race and deliberately interfering in the internal affairs of other countries.
Mr. Ly Thuong Phuc warned against the establishment of “NATO-like” military alliances in the Asia- Pacific , stressing that it would only push the region into a “spiral of dispute and conflict”.
Relations between Washington and Beijing are tense over a series of issues related to Taiwan, the South China Sea and US President Joe Biden's restrictions on semiconductor chip exports.
Earlier, speaking at a meeting in Singapore, US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said Washington was “strongly committed” to maintaining the status quo in Taiwan, criticizing China for refusing to hold military talks.
“China is not willing to engage seriously in mechanisms for managing crises between the two militaries. The more communication, the more misunderstandings and miscalculations that can lead to crisis or conflict can be avoided,” Mr. Austin emphasized.
The US Secretary of Defense announced that Washington will continue to regularly travel and fly over the Taiwan Strait and the South China Sea to emphasize that these are international waters, responding to Beijing's extensive territorial claims in the region.
